Abstract. The increasing number and severity of floods, driven by phenomena such as urbanization, deforestation, subsidence and climate change, creates a growing need for accurate and timely flood maps. This research focussed on creating flood maps using user generated content from Twitter. Twitter data has added value over traditional methods such as remote sensing and hydraulic models, since the data is available almost instantly, in contrast to remote sensing and requires less detail than hydraulic models. Deterministic flood maps created using these data showed good performance (F(2) = 0.69) for a case study in York (UK). For York the main source of uncertainty in the probabilistic flood maps was found to be the error of the locations derived from the Twitter data. Errors in the elevation data and parameters of the applied algorithm contributed less to flood extent uncertainty. Although the generated probabilistic maps tended to overestimate the actual probability of flooding, they gave a reasonable representation of flood extent uncertainty in the area. This study illustrates that inherently uncertain data from social media can be used to derive information about flooding.

ABSTRACTData from non-traditional data sources, such as social media, search engines, and remote sensing, have previously demonstrated utility for disease surveillance. Few studies, however, have focused on countries in Africa, particularly during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In this study, we use searches of COVID-19 symptoms, questions, and at-home remedies submitted to Google to model COVID-19 in South Africa, and assess how well the Google search data forecast short-term COVID-19 trends. Our findings suggest that information seeking trends on COVID-19 could guide models for anticipating COVID-19 trends and coordinating appropriate response measures.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> In mitigating and helping lessen the possible effects and damages of disaster to the communities, the transmission of information or end products derived from remote sensing and other multidisciplinary technologies into the community should be immediate, accessible and comprehensive to aid in better planning and decision-making procedures. In this paper, we share a hazard information dissemination procedure which integrates the use of outputs derived from numerical models, web applications and systems as well as the use of social media and telecommunications to promote the utilization of advanced science and technology outputs that could represent and visualize various flooding scenarios through social media and dynamic communication between stakeholders.</p>

The ISPRS Student Consortium is an international organization for students and young professionals in the fields of photogrammetry, remote sensing, and the geospatial information sciences. Since its start ten years ago, the number of members of the Student Consortium has been steadily growing, now reaching close to 1000. Its increased popularity, especially in recent years, is mainly due to the organization's worldwide involvement in student matters. The Student Consortium has helped organize numerous summer schools, youth forums, and student technical sessions at ISPRS sponsored conferences. In addition, the organization publishes a newsletter, and hosts several social media outlets in order to keep its global membership up-to-date on a regular basis. This paper will describe the structure of the organization, and it will give some example of its past student related activities.
