Harvesting few amount of charge from environmental ambient sources namely, wind, thermal, heat, vibration, solar utilizing micro scale energy harvesting devices, offers vast view of powering for numerous portable low power electronic devices. However, power harvesting using piezoelectric crystal from low power ambient source nowdays has increasing popularity with the advantages of low cost, long life time, stability and clean energy. Recent trends have shown that most researchers are interested in designing a low resonance frequency vibration based energy harvesting devices despite of its challenges ahead. In this paper, a low frequency based rectangular shape piezoelectric cantilever beam has been developed for energy harvesting applications. The proposed vibration based low frequency cantilever beam using piezoelectric element has been developed by finite element analysis (FEA) employing COMSOL Multiphysics platform. The main goal of the study is to analyze the outcome of geometric model of a piezoelectric cantilever beam and to calculate the resonance frequency of the structure according to its length. The material of PZT-5H, has been considered to enhance the efficiency of the low frequency based cantilever beam. Finally, the proposed result is compared with other existing works.

Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are energy harvesting devices where the anode is buried inside marine sediment, while the cathode stays in an aerobic environment on the surface of the water. To apply this SCMFC as a power source, it is crucial to have an efficient power management system, leading to development of an effective energy harvesting technique suitable for such biological devices. In this work, we demonstrate an effective method to improve power extraction with SMFCs based on anodes alternation. We have altered the setup of a traditional SMFC to include two anodes working with the same cathode. This setup is compared with a traditional setup (control) and a setup that undergoes intermittent energy harvesting, establishing the improvement of energy collection using the anodes alternation technique. Control SMFC produced an average power density of 6.3 mW/m2 and SMFC operating intermittently produced 8.1 mW/m2. On the other hand, SMFC operating using the anodes alternation technique produced an average power density of 23.5 mW/m2. These results indicate the utility of the proposed anodes alternation method over both the control and intermittent energy harvesting techniques. The Anode Alternation can also be viewed as an advancement of the intermittent energy harvesting method.

Long power wide area networks (LPWAN) systems play an important role in monitoring environmental conditions for smart cities applications. With the development of Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSN), and energy harvesting devices, ultra-low power sensor nodes (SNs) are able to collect and monitor the information for environmental protection, urban planning, and risk prevention. This paper presents a WSN of self-powered IoT SNs energetically autonomous using Plant Microbial Fuel Cells (PMFCs). An energy harvesting device has been adapted with the PMFC to enable a batteryless operation of the SN providing power supply to the sensor network. The low-power communication feature of the SN network is used to monitor the environmental data with a dynamic power management strategy successfully designed for the PMFC-based LoRa sensor node. Environmental data of ozone (O3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are monitored in real time through a web application providing IoT cloud services with security and privacy protocols.
