Abstract We systematically study anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) based on poly(aryl-co-aryl piperidinium) (c-PAP) copolymers and provide a scalable scenario for high-performance AEMFCs, covering the optimization of the relative humidity (RH), catalyst species, catalyst interfaces, and hydrophobic treatment. Specifically, high-water-permeable c-PAP ionomers in the presence of moderate relative humidity (RH) (75%/100%) can be used to address anode flooding and cathode dry-out issues. The composition of the catalyst layer and the anode hydrophobic treatment significantly impact the power density of AEMFCs. c-PAP-based AEMFCs with optimum catalyst composition achieve a peak power density (PPD) of 2.70 W cm-2 at 80 oC in H2-O2 after hydrophobic treatment. Pt1Co1/C cathode-based AEMFCs reach a PPD of 1.80 W cm-2 along with an outstanding specific power of 13.87 W mg-1. Moreover, these AEMFCs can be operated under a 0.2 A cm-2 current density at 60 oC for over 300 h with a voltage decay rate of ~300 μv h-1.

The medium frequency transformer (MFT) with nanocrystalline alloys is quintessential in new DC–DC converters involved in various front-end applications. The center piece to achieve high-performance, efficient MFTs is the core. There are various options of core materials; however, no deep information is available about which material characteristics and design procedure combo are best to get high performance MFTs while operating at maximal power density. To provide new insights about interrelation between the selection of the core material with the compliance technical specifications, differently to other proposals, this research work aims to design and build, with the same methodology, two MFT prototypes at 20 kHz, with nanocrystalline and ferrite cores, to highlight power density, and overall performance and cost, as matching design criteria. As the experimental results show, a nanocrystalline core has the highest power density (36.91 kW/L), designed at 0.8 T to obtain low losses at 20 kHz, achieving an efficiency of 99.7%. The power density in the ferrite MFT is 56.4% lower than in the nanocrystalline MFT. However, regarding construction cost, the ferrite MFT is 46% lower, providing this a trend towards low-cost DC–DC converters. Finally, high power density in MFTs increases the power density of power DC–DC converters, which have relevant applications in fuel cell-supplied systems, renewable energies, electric vehicles, and solid-state transformers.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) propulsion technology is significantly related to the flight performance of UAVs, which has become one of the most important development directions of aviation. It should be noted that UAVs have three types of propulsion systems, namely the fuel, hybrid fuel-electric, and pure electric, respectively. This paper presents and discusses the classification, working principles, characteristics, and critical technologies of these three types of propulsion systems. It is helpful to establish the development framework of the UAV propulsion system and provide the essential information on electric propulsion UAVs. Additionally, future technologies and development, including the high-power density motors, converters, power supplies, are discussed for the electric propulsion UAVs. In the near future, the electric propulsion system would be widely used in UAVs. The high-power density system would become the development trend of electric UAVs. Thus, this review article provides comprehensive views and multiple comparisons of propulsion systems for UAVs.
