AbstractInspired by the theory of leaky wave antenna, a broadband and wide-angle frequency scanning antenna is proposed in this paper. My goal is to trade a narrow frequency band for a wide-angle beam scanning. Since the dispersion of spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) mode slow-wave possesses larger gradient than that of the waves in the air, the metallic corrugated line (MCL) is adopted for energy transmission. To convert confined slow-wave into radiated fast-wave, a number of metallic patches are alternatively and periodically loaded besides the MCL and fed by electrically coupling. Owing to the frequency-dispersive phase difference between two patches, the resultant radiations are capable of beam scanning. As an example, the fabricated prototype operates in a relative bandwidth of 19.5 % (from 7.4 GHz to 9.0 GHz). Both the simulated and measured results have verified that the main beam of leaky-wave radiation can continuously scan from the backward direction to the forward direction with a scanning angular domain of 56° and an average gain level of 12.0 dB.

Realizing multiple beam shaping functionalities in a single plasmonic device is crucial for photonic integration. Both plasmonic Bessel-like beams and bottle beams have potential applications in nanophotonics, particularly in plasmonic based circuits, near field optical trapping, and micro manipulation. Thus, it is very interesting to find new approaches for simultaneous generation of surface plasmon polariton Bessel-like beams and bottle beams in a single photonic device. Two types of polarization-dependent devices, which consist of arrays of spatially distributed sub-wavelength rectangular slits, are designed. The array of slits are specially arranged to construct an X-shaped or an IXI-shaped array, namely X-shaped device and IXI-shaped devices, respectively. Under illumination of circularly polarized light, plasmonic zero-order and first-order Bessel-like beams can be simultaneously generated on both sides of X-shaped devices. Plasmonic Bessel-like beam and bottle beam can be simultaneously generated on both sides of IXI-shaped devices. By changing the handedness of circularly polarized light, for both X-shaped and IXI-shaped devices, the positions of the generated plasmonic beams on either side of device can be dynamically interchanged.

We numerically demonstrate trapping and rotation of particles using a metasurface formed by arranging nanocavities as a right-handed Archimedes’ spiral. Excited by a 90° linearly polarized beam, a focused surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field is formed at the center of the spiral, and the particle can be trapped by the field. While excited by −45° linearly polarized beams, a vortex SPP field carrying orbital angular momentum is formed, and the particles can be trapped and rotated in the clockwise direction at the vortex field.
