The high estimated position error in current commercial-off-the-shelf (GPS/INS) impedes achieving precise autonomous takeoff and landing (TOL) flight operations. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose an integrated global positioning system (GPS)/inertial navigation system (INS)/optical flow (OF) solution in which the OF provides an accurate augmentation to the GPS/INS. To ensure accurate and robust OF augmentation, we have used a robust modeling method to estimate OF based on a set of real-time experiments conducted under various simulated helicopter-landing scenarios. Knowing that the accuracy of the OF measurements is dependent on the accuracy of the height measurements, we have developed a real-time testing environment to model and validate the obtained dynamic OF model at various heights. The performance of the obtained OF model matches the real OF sensor with 87.70% fitting accuracy. An accuracy of 0.006 m/s mean error between the real OF sensor velocity and the velocity of the OF model is also achieved. The velocity measurements of the obtained OF model and the position of the GPS/INS are used in performing a dynamic model-based sensor fusion algorithm. In the proposed solution, the OF sensor is engaged when the vehicle approaches a landing spot that is equipped with a predefined landing pattern. The proposed solution has succeeded in performing a helicopter auto TOL with a maximum position error of 27 cm.

In this study, for Istanbul, there are two Cors Networks (Cors-TR, Iski Cors) providing Virtual Reference Station (VRS), and Flachen Korrektur Parameter (FKP), corrections to rover receiver for determining 3-D positions in real time by Global Positioning System (GPS). To determine which method (or technique) provides accurate method for position fixing, a test network consisting of 49 stations was set up in Yildiz Technical University Davudpasa Campus. The coordinates of the stations in the test network were determined by conventional geodetic, classical RTK, VRS and FKP methods serviced by both Cors-TR and Iski Cors. The results were compared to the coordinates by the conventional method by using total station. The results showed a complex structure as the accuracy differs from one component to another such as in horizontal coordinates, Y components by CorsTR_VRS and Cors_TR_ FKP showed 'best' results while the same technique provided X components consistent accuracy with the Y component but less accurate than by real time kinematic (RTK). In vertical components, of all the techniques used for the h components, CorsTR_VRS showed 'best' accuracy with three outliers.

This paper evaluates the ability of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to determine accurately the second-by-second operating mode of a vehicle in the real-world transportation network. GPS offers the ability to obtain second-by-second velocity directly and to obtain acceleration data indirectly from a vehicle traveling in the real-world traffic network. Although GPS has been used successfully in travel behavior and route choice surveys, the uncertainty in accuracy of velocity and acceleration data obtained from the GPS warrants further investigation to gain a better understanding of the range and spatial distribution of vehicle emissions. In this study, data from two GPS receivers and a ScanTool were collected over five repetitions of a 65-mi route. The results indicate that GPS receivers perform as well as the ScanTool when measuring velocity. Furthermore, the GPS receivers determined the 1-s operating mode of the vehicle successfully when measured against the ScanTool. These results will aid in the future development of vehicle emissions models and allow for an analysis of real-world emissions based on real-world operating mode data.
