Rolling bearing is a key part of turbomachinery. The performance and reliability of the bearing is vital to the safe operation of turbomachinery. Therefore, degradation feature extraction of rolling bearing is important to prevent it from failure. During rolling bearing degradation, machine vibration can increase, and this may be used to predict the degradation. The vibration signals are however complicated and nonlinear, making it difficult to extract degradation features effectively. Here, a novel degradation feature extraction method based on optimal ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and improved composite spectrum (CS) analysis is proposed. Firstly, because only a few IMFs are expected to contain the information related to bearing fault, EEMD is utilized to pre-process the vibration signals. An optimization method is designed for adaptively determining the appropriate EEMD parameters for the signal, so that the significant feature components of the faulty bearing can be extracted from the signal and separated from background noise and other irrelevant components to bearing faults. Then, Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and correlation kurtosis (CK) are employed to select the sensitive intrinsic mode function (IMF) components and obtain fault information effectively. Finally, an improved CS analysis algorithm is used to fuse the selected sensitive IMF components, and the CS entropy (CSE) is extracted as degradation feature. Experimental data on the test bearings with single point faults separately at the inner race and rolling element were studied to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed method. The results show that it can assess the bearing degradation status and has good sensitivity and good consistency to the process of bearing degradation.

Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) can overcome the mode mixing problem in Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) effectively. The Hilbert-Huang transform still exists end effect in applications, in order to improve the end effect, this paper put forward a method of fault feature extraction based on improved EEMD and Hilbert transform which combines support vector regression (SVR) machine with mirror extension to continue the signal. The analysis on simulation experiments results show that the method can restrain the end effect effectively, get a more accurate instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude.

In rotating machinery, the malfunctions of rolling bearings are one of the most common faults. To prevent machine breakdown, the pattern recognition of rolling bearing faults has been a pivotal issue for fault identification and classification. This study proposes a new feature extraction method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and singular value decomposition (SVD) for fault classification. The proposed E–S method (EEMD combined with SVD using feature parameters) intends to enhance the faults identification capability in different working conditions, including various fault types (FT), fault severities (FS), and fault loads (FL). In this study, the E–S method is adopted to analyze the simulated signals. And the experiment further discusses three cases of different FT, FS, and FL separately under six different classifiers. The experimental results show that different fault classes can be effectively distinguished by the proposed E–S in comparison with other traditional feature extraction methods. Hence, the proposed method is verified to have an effective and excellent performance in bearing fault classification.

The vibration signal of an early rolling bearing is nonstationary and nonlinear, and the fault signal is weak and difficult to extract. To address this problem, this paper proposes a genetic mutation particle swarm optimization variational mode decomposition (GMPSO-VMD) algorithm and applies it to rolling bearing vibration signal fault feature extraction. Firstly, the minimum envelope entropy is used as the objective function of the GMPSO to find the optimal parameter combination of the VMD algorithm. Then, the optimized VMD algorithm is used to decompose the vibration signal of the rolling bearing and several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are obtained. The envelope spectrum analysis of GMPSO-VMD decomposed rolling bearing fault signal IMF1 was carried out. Moreover, the feature frequency of the four fault states of the rolling bearing are extracted accurately. Finally, the GMPSO-VMD algorithm is utilized to analyze the simulation signal and rolling bearing fault vibration signal. The effectiveness of the GMPSO-VMD algorithm is verified by comparing it with the fixed parameter VMD (FP-VMD) algorithm, complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) algorithm and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) algorithm.

In order to improve the effectiveness for identifying rolling bearing faults at an early stage, the present paper proposed a method that combined the so-called complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) method with a correlation theory for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearing. The cross-correlation coefficient between the original signal and each intrinsic mode function (IMF) was calculated in order to reduce noise and select an effective IMF. Using the present method, a rolling bearing fault experiment with vibration signals measured by acceleration sensors was carried out, and bearing inner race and outer race defect at a varying rotating speed with different degrees of defect were analyzed. And the proposed method was compared with several algorithms of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to verify its effectiveness. Experimental results showed that the proposed method was available for detecting the bearing faults and able to detect the fault at an early stage. It has higher computational efficiency and is capable of overcoming modal mixing and aliasing. Therefore, the proposed method is more suitable for rolling bearing diagnosis.
