AbstractA broadband circularly polarized slotted square patch antenna with horizontal meandered strip (HMS) is presented and studied. The HMS feeding technique provides the good impedance matching and broadside symmetrical radiation patterns. A set of cross asymmetrical slots are etched on the radiating patch to realize the circular polarization. An electrically small stub is added on the edge of the antenna for further improvement in performance. Measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth (IBW) and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna are 32.31 % (3.14–4.35 GHz) and 20.91 % (3.34–4.12 GHz), respectively. The gain of the antenna is varied from 3.5 to 4.86dBi within 3-dB ARBW. Measured results matched well with the simulated results.

A small-size 2×2 broadband circularly polarized microstrip antenna array is proposed in this article. The array has four broadband dual-feed U-slot patch antenna elements with circular polarization, and the sequential feeding technique is used to further enhance the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth. The lateral size of the fabricated array is as small as 1.33λ0×1.33λ0, and the profile is only 0.04λ0. Measured results show that the overlapped −10 dB reflection coefficient and the 3 dB AR bandwidth is 53%, and the variation of the measured realized gain is less than 1 dB for S-band satellite communications (1.98–2.2 GHz).

This paper proposes a compact microstrip patch antenna for operating in 2.4 GHz ISM and 3.5 GHz WiMAX bands with circularly polarized (CP) radiation. The CP radiation in dual-bands is a result of two multilayered truncated corner stacked square patches, while the reactive impedance surface (RIS) is used for antenna size miniaturization for the lower operating frequency band. Since the overall lateral antenna dimensions are controlled by the lower frequency band (higher wavelength), reducing the electrical size of the antenna for lower band results in overall smaller antenna dimensions. The measured 3-dB axial ratio bandwidths of the in-house fabricated antenna prototype are 6.1% (2.40–2.55 GHz) for the lower band and 5.7% (3.40–3.60 GHz) for the upper band, while the 10-dBS11bandwidths for the two bands are 8.1% (2.39–2.59 GHz) and 6.9% (3.38–3.62 GHz), respectively. The maximum gain at boresight for the lower band is 2.93 dBic at 2.5 GHz, while the gain for the upper band is 6.26 dBic at 3.52 GHz. The overall volume of the proposed antenna is 0.292λo × 0.292λo × 0.044λo, whereλois the corresponding free-space wavelength at 2.5 GHz.

AbstractThis paper presents a compact dual-band proximity-fed circularly polarized (CP) patch antenna for BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) operation at B1 (1,561 MHz) and B3 (1,268 MHz) bands. The antenna aperture is minimized down to 26.6 mm (λ/9 at the B3 band) in diameter and 12 mm (λ/20 at the B3 band) in thickness using high permittivity dielectric substrate and meandered slots. The antenna design features that the resonant frequency in the higher band could be tuned independently by adjusting the branch length and breadth without affecting the lower band. To achieve right-handed CP (RHCP) radiation property, quadrature phase feeding is employed together with a broadband 0°–90° hybrid utilizing a small surface mount LTCC hybrid coupler chip. Experimental results show that the RHCP gain maintains larger than 1.5 dBic and the axial ratio (AR) stays below 3 dB within the B1 and B3 bands. This antenna design is a promising candidate for small BDS arrays as well as other dual-band BDS applications.
