This paper presents numerical simulations of the flow around a NACA 0015 airfoil at static and dynamic stall. The treatment of these configurations is a very challenging task for CFD applications. The turbulent flow around the static and in pitch oscillation airfoil is computed using different approaches: 2D RANS, 3D RANS and DES methodologies and with finer and finer meshes in order to try to reach a space converged solution. The main conclusion of the paper is that the prediction of static and all the more dynamic stall is not mature with present modeling capabilities.

The paper presents calculations of flow in a mixing vessel stirred by a six-blade Rushton impeller. Mathematical model used in computations is based on the ensemble averaged conservation equations. An efficient finite-volume method based on unstructured grids with rotating sliding parts composed of arbitrary polyhedral elements is used together with various turbulence models. Besides the standard k-ε model which served as a reference, k-ε-v2 model (Durbin, 1995) and the recently proposed hybrid EVM/RSM turbulence model (Basara & Jakirlic, 2003) were used in the calculations. The main aim of the paper is to investigate if more advanced turbulence models are needed for this type of CFD applications. The results are compared with the available experimental data.

The evaluation of ship resistance is of paramount importance having a decisive impact on the economic performances and efficiency depending on mission. If new IMO requirements through the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) are taken into account the necessity to have more and more accurate tools capable to consider the influences of different parameters became mandatory. The availability of towing tank facilities and the full scale trials are the practical means in order to be able to confirm the accuracy of theoretical formulations and to define the limits of CFD applications. Based on the results of the towing tank tests, a direct comparison with the results provided by classical methods and CFD computations can be systematically can be performed. On the other hand, the influences of the modifications operated on the fore part of the ship aretheoretically evaluated and compared with the towing tank results. Consequently, the paper is focused on the comparison of the results evaluated using different tools which have been carried out for a Chemical Tanker built by Constanta Shipyard Romania.
