The rapid growth of mobile phone technologies encourages many researchers to explore, design and develop mobile learning applications for tertiary students. In computer science related disciplines, students always find computer science concepts as complex, abstract, and esoteric subject. Hence, we have seen the number of students enrolled for computer science related programs has decreased lately. Current delivery methods for computer science concepts are found not to be interesting to the students. This project focuses on the design and development of an AVL tree learning object for tertiary students by utilizing current mobile phone features such as mobility, multimedia capability and connectivity. Our approach is to incorporate video clips in presenting the algorithm systematically. With this mobile learning application, student could learn at his or her own pace, anywhere anytime. This application intends to complement the current traditional classroom and e-learning systems. Initial testing has shown that a well-presented video clip of AVL tree concept that delivered through mobile phone has a great potential to promote and enhance learning process.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to figure out the effects of WhatsApp mobile learning in teaching reading to students in the 2nd semester of Informatics Technique Program at the STMIK (College of Computer Science Management) Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Experimental study is the research design applied to figure out more the effect of WhatsApp usage by the learners in reading lesson. The classes are grouped into experimental and control groups. Students in experimental group have additional learning activities, besides the normal class in the classroom, that is additional learning using WhatsApp mobile learning; but students in control group just have the normal class as usual in the classroom. Questionaires, WhatsApp platforms, and Pre-post tests become the sources of data collection used. The results indicated that WhatsApp mobile learning usage in learning reading skill to the 2nd semester students of Informatics Technique Program at the STMIK Pontianak shows an insignificant results of this study. So, it is needed to support from other institutions for the ease and decent WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) access for using WhatsApp in mobile phone assisted learning.KEY WORD: Mobile Phone Assisted Learning; Reading Lesson; Using WhatsApp. KATA KUNCI: Pembelajaran Berbantukan Telefon Genggam; Pelajaran Membaca; Penggunaan “WhatsApp”.About the Author: Susanti, M.Pd. is a Lecturer of Information System at the STMIK (Sekolah Tinggi Manajemen Ilmu Komputer or College of Computer Science Management) Pontianak, Jalan Merdeka Barat No.372, Kota Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The gender digital divide has been widely discussed and researched over the years. Previous studies have focused on a number of factors such as computer attitude, computer anxiety, computer self-efficacy, and computer experience. This study empirically tested the sensitivity of a learning style instrument, the Gregorc Style Delineator (GSD), to gender in a sample of students who studied computer programming in Hong Kong secondary schools. Results indicated that females had higher preference for concrete sequential (CS) and abstract random (AR) compared with males. Males had higher preference for concrete random (CR) than females. From these results, we proposed learning style-based pedagogical practices to teach computer programming. In order to address the needs of female students, we further proposed that learning style-based pedagogical practices need to move from a gender neutral to gender sensitive approach. This proposal helps to improve student learning through individualisation in pedagogy in terms of gender and learning styles and contributes to a gender and style sensitive computer science classroom. Eventually, through various remedial interventions, we anticipate more female participation in computer science field and hence the gender issue is addressed.
