Experience shows that under unidirectional wind or certain terrain, the surface of post insulators is non-uniformly polluted between windward and leeward sides, which affects the flashover characteristics. In this paper, a formulation of residual pollution layer resistance was proposed under this non-uniformity and a typical post insulator was taken as an example to analyze and calculate its residual resistance. The theoretical resistance was verified by numerical simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics. The proposed resistance formulation was then implemented in a DC flashover dynamic model to determine the flashover voltage (Ucal), which was validated by artificial flashover tests. Then the factors affecting DC flashover voltage were analyzed. Research results indicate that: the residual resistance formulation agrees well with simulation results, especially when the arc length exceeds 70% of the leakage distance. The good concordance between theoretical and experimental flashover voltages with most relative error within ±10%, validates the flashover model and its residual resistance formulation. Ucal gets impaired under this non-uniformity. The degree of reduction is related to salt deposit density ratio (m) of windward to leeward side and leeward side area proportion (k).

A case study of ageing on XLPE conductor insulation of 20kV primary distribution feeder is presented in this paper. The insulation degradation mainly occurred around conductor tie where the conductor is attached to the post insulator. A section of distribution feeder with defects on the conductor insulation has been examined for this study. Potential losses due to presence of discharges have been investigated by measuring the difference current at locations of the affected conductor. Temperature measurements of the insulation surface have also been carried out. Provisional maintenance procedures were introduced to eliminate the discharges. Measurements of current and surface temperature were repeated nine months after completion of the maintenance work. Results indicated that the discharges have been completely disappeared.

To study the mechanical properties of porcelain post insulators, the finite element model was established by ANSYS to calculate stress and strain distribution under bending or torsion moments. Mechanical tests based on resistance strain measurement technology were carried out on the actual porcelain post insulators to measure their strain distribution. The results show that sheds will cause strain concentration at the roots of porcelain column whether the post insulator is bearing bending or torsion load. The stress and strain of shed roots gradually increase from top to bottom along the post insulator when bearing bending moment, while they are relatively uniform under torsion moment. It should be taken full account of the stress concentration caused by sheds during the selection or maintenance of porcelain post insulators.
