The raw strain data collected from Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) railway are in variable amplitude. This paper discovers how the variable amplitude data can be changed to the constant amplitude data. It is found that the raw strain data is not suitable for fatigue and strength testing on Prestressed Concrete Sleepers (PCS). Apart from that, the most suitable method in determining the numbers of cycles is Rainflow Cycle Counting Method. Through rainflow cycle counting method, the number of cycles is determined. The numbers of cycles are used to simplify the laboratory test such as fatigue and strength test for the PCS. The frequencies of dynamic loading test on the PCS are set based the numbers of cycles. The constant strain data are also converted into constant loading data using the relationship of stress-strain and loading-stress. Constant amplitude loading will again simplify the laboratory testing. The goal is to show that the designs used in PCS are appropriate based on current loading demand. Then, a comparison of constant amplitude data is made between different numbers of coaches and freight train. The maximum data from the comparison shows that the higher loadings are obtained from freight train.

An appropriate choice of building shape and architectural modifications can result in the reduction of motion by altering the flow pattern around a building. Tapering which is one of aerodynamic devices has been known to be effective to reduce acrosswind response [1, 2]. The exterior wind loading patterns on claddings are sensitive to the building shape. When a building has a tapered cross section along the height, the influence of the exterior wind loading patterns on the wind-induced high-cycle fatigue damage of the cladding fastener of the tapered building needs to be found. In this study, the fatigue damage of the cladding fastener of a non-tapered building and two tapered buildings is estimated by using the rainflow cycle counting method and Miner’s rule. The fatigue damage is compared with one another in order to investigate the influence of the tapered cross section on the fatigue damage of cladding fasteners on side faces of tall buildings

Mean fundamental frequencies of male and female subjects obtained with FLORIDA I and a tape striation counting procedure were compared. The fundamental frequencies obtained with these two methods were similar and it appears that the tape striation counting procedure is a viable, simple, and inexpensive alternative to more costly and complicated procedures and instrumentation.

The pirarucu counting method is a simplified stock assessment that has been used as the main parameter for establishing the annual fishing quotas in the management system of the Mamirauá and Amanã Reserves. In spite of the method’s directness, considering the recent expansion of managed fisheries, we cannot confirm that the counters thoroughly obey the original methodology. There is a concern of a technical nature, as the results of the counts directly influence the fishing quotas, and the lack of technical supervision or the inadequate application of the method are factors that can compromise the management system as a whole. This study aims to assess the counts that took place in six fishing environments of the Jarauá Sector, Mamirauá Reserve, and in four fishing environments of the area of the Pantaleão Fishing Agreement Complex, Amanã Reserve. We verified the consistency of the information resulting from the count, presented to the technical staff. To do this, we conducted recounts of juvenile and adult pirarucus in the same environments. In the Jarauá Sector we found significant differences in the counting results from Samaumerinha do Tucuxi and Curuçá do Centro. In Comprido do Maciel we found differences regarding the number of counted areas. In the sampled environments from the Pantaleão region we did not find significant differences between the counts. The results highlight the importance of creating assessment mechanisms for the counts, for the purpose of preventing possible alterations in the results that might influence the fishing quotas without a biological reason for justifying such quotas.
