The paper presents a methodology for the design of the manufacturing cells, covering all the necessary steps, from the analysis of the customers’ needs, to part families for group technologies, process engineering, control procedures, production rate, production planning (push or pull workflow), supply in the manufacturing cell, workcell configuration, work standardisation. The necessary tools through each stage are presented. Also, there are presented links to major company systems. For each design stage, deliverables are specified. this design approach is not linear. At each stage it is possible (and indicated) to go back and analyse the previously established parameters. The methodology is a complex one, and in a wider space the detailed parameters will be presented in extenso.

Abstract A hierarchical approach to production planning for complex manufacturing systems is presented. A single facility comprising a number of work-centers that produce multiple part types is considered. The planning horizon includes a sequence of time periods, and the demand for all part types is assumed to be known. The production planning problem consists of minimizing the holding costs for all part types as well as the work-in-process, and backlogging cost for the end items. We present a two-level hierarchy that is based on aggregating parts to part families, work-centers to manufacturing cells and time periods to aggregate time periods. The solution at the aggregate level is imposed as a constraint to the detailed level problem which employs a decomposition based on manufacturing cells. This architecture uses a rolling horizon strategy to perform the production management function. We have employed perturbation analysis techniques to adjust certain parameters of the optimization problems at the detailed level to reach a near-optimal detailed production plan.

Production planning is often challenging for small medium enterprises (SMEs) company. Most of the SMEs are having difficulty in determining the optimal level of the production output which can affect their business performance. Product mix optimization is one of the main key for production planning. Many company have used linear programming model in determining the optimal combination of various products that need to be produced in order to maximize profit. Thus, this study aims for profit maximization of a SME company in Malaysia by using linear programming model. The purposes of this study are to identify the current process in the production line and to formulate a linear programming model that would suggest a viable product mix to ensure optimum profitability for the company. ABC Sdn Bhd is selected as a case study company for product mix profit maximization study. Some conclusive observations have been drawn and recommendations have been suggested. This study will provide the company and other companies, particularly in Malaysia, an exposure of linear programming method in making decisions to determine the maximum profit for different product mix.
