The role of antibiotic prophylaxis for prevention of infective endocarditis is unknown. Endocarditis prophylaxis is recommended for certain high-risk individuals prior to dental procedures. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature of a patient with complex congenital heart disease developing endocarditis in the period immediately following otherwise uncomplicated intrauterine device insertion.

The knowledge of cardiac anatomy is a prerequisite to the application of the segmental classification. Atria, ventricles, and vessels present anatomical markers that allow their precise identification. The segmental–sequential classification, that considers the heart as formed by three segments—atria, ventricles, and great arteries, connected at the atrioventricular and ventriculo-arterial junctions, permits an easy classification of complex congenital heart disease, useful for clinicians, surgeons, and pathologists.

Magnetic navigation has been established as an alternative to conventional, manual catheter navigation for invasive electrophysiology interventions about a decade ago. Besides the obvious advantage of radiation protection for the operator who is positioned remotely from the patient, there are additional benefits of steering the tip of a very floppy catheter. This manuscript reviews the published evidence from simple arrhythmias in patients with normal cardiac anatomy to the most complex congenital heart disease. This progress was made possible by the introduction of improved catheters and most importantly irrigated-tip electrodes.
