If knowledge does not create a sustained and unified sense of organizational self (skepticism is rife) then strategic inquiry can turn to vision, a move advocated by Henry Mintzberg amongst others. The chapter considers what it is to author a strategic vision, using the novel The Shape of Things to Come by H. G. Wells as an indicative and provocative example of an organizational attempt to present its own form to itself and others. The risks associated with propaganda and dogmatic assertion are discussed, as are the strategy documents by which many modern organizations attempt to instil an equivalent vision to that envisaged by Wells.

The organizational structure of the Indonesian Government is currently not efficient and not effective. Its structure is impressed too wide and long so that it raises unexpected costs and time delays and decreases governance. The purpose of this research is to study the organizational structure suitable for the Indonesian Government. This research uses qualitative research method with survey approach. The main reference in this research is Designing Effective Organization: Structures in Fives by Henry Mintzberg. The sample is academics and practitioners in governmental organizations. The results showed that a good organizational structure for the Government of Indonesia is functional organization form, the slim and short structure, so as to facilitate and speed up the communication process, the process of accountability, and accountability process in the implementation of government tasks, and finally increase government governance.

O objetivo do presente estudo descritivo é compreender os significados e as características da gestão para os coordenadores de curso superior de uma universidade federal de Minas Gerais. Para tanto, foram utilizados como base os ensinamentos de Henry Mintzberg (2010). Para a coleta de dados foram realizadas entrevistas semi-estruturadas e para a sistematização dos resultados a técnica análise de conteúdo. Verificou-se que os coordenadores compreendem a gestão de curso superior como o ato de gerenciar o seu projeto pedagógico, como a articulação existente entre os alunos e a administração superior da universidade e como o processo burocrático e de organização que envolve o curso. Dentre as características observadas, ritmo acelerado, no qual as atividades são variadas e desenvolvidas de forma fragmentada. Enfrentam desafios ao lidar com a falta de recursos materiais e humanos e com a falta de uma política de capacitação para o cargo. Também de conciliar as atividades de gestor com as demais atividades da carreira docente, sem que se observe uma política de incentivo. Conclui-se que embora o coordenador esteja gerindo a formação do profissional do futuro, se encontra solto numa estrutura burocrática e política, reagindo às ações e não agindo estrategicamente.

AbstractSeveral influential writers including Henry Mintzberg and Gary Hamel have highlighted the need for organizations to value the contribution to strategy work of middle managers in an uncertain world. In this study quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews are used to mix methods and investigate the role of middle managers in strategy-making process in Australia. The results indicate that middle managers are the ‘doers’ of strategy, with important ‘analyst’, ‘coordinator’, ‘information source’ and ‘communicator’ roles. Middle managers reported some frustration in interviews that at times they feel their input to strategic conversations is not translated effectively into organization strategy.
