Sleep habits and sleep problems associated with depressive symptoms in school‐age children

Abstract The aim of this study was to verify possible associations between maternal depressive symptoms, children’s behavioral problems and perceptions regarding the family interactions, considering the reports of mothers and children. A total of 60 mothers and their school-age children were divided into two equal groups, according to the presence or absence of maternal depression indicators, and evaluated using the following instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and scales of family interaction (Escalas de Qualidade nas Interações Familiares). The results indicate that maternal depressive symptoms were associated with children’s behavioral problems and with family interactions reported by mothers and children. Maternal depression and positive family interactions reported by the mothers predicted behavioral problems in children. Positive family interactions reported by the mothers also mediated the association between maternal depression and children’s behavioral problems, highlighting the relevance of interventions with mothers with depression indicators that have school-age children.

Abstract Introduction. Childhood depression is a disease that is becoming more frequent. Few reports address parental perception of children depressive symptoms, and these studies have not been carried out in community samples. Objective. To evaluate the correlation and agreement of depressive symptoms in school-age children, and their parent’s perception about emotional and conduct abnormalities. Method. A transversal study was performed in 284 children who filled a Children Depression Inventory. One of their parents filled a Strengths and Difficulty Questionnaire, and correlation between scores and subcomponent scores were assessed. Agreement between presence of depressive symptoms in children and their parent’s perception of abnormal emotional and/or conduct reports was also obtained. Results. 47 children were identified with depressive symptoms. We found moderate correlation between scores. We did not find agreement between the presence of depressive symptoms in the children and the report of emotional and conduct abnormalities by parents. Discussion and conclusion. There is a modest correlation between depressive symptom severity and parental perception of abnormal emotions and/or behaviors. We found no evidence of agreement between these domains in our study, which suggests that parents fail to perceive negative emotions or conducts as depressive symptoms in their children. Parental reports should be addressed by healthcare workers, and their emotional significance should be interpreted. An intentional search of depressive symptomatology in children should be a priority.

Background: Sleep problems during pregnancy may cause many complications that reduce quality of life.Aim: This study aims to determine the relationship between pregnant women's sleep characteristics and depressive symptoms.Methods: A hospital-based, cross-sectional study was conducted. Pregnant women were selected from the population by using the an improbable random sampling method. This study sample included 436 pregnant women who met the study’s inclusion criteria. To collect data, this study used an information form that was developed by the researcher after reviewing relevant literature, the Women's Health Initiative Insomnia Rating Scale (WHIIRS), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The researchers used face-to-face interviews method to collect data from the participants, pregnant women who were examined in the polyclinic.Results: This study found that 36% of participating pregnant women reported insomnia, and 38.1% experienced depressive symptoms. It also determined that participants who had problems with insomnia, who experienced a change in sleep habits, and who did not wake up feeling rested experienced depressive symptoms 1.64, 2.79, and 2.59 times more than those who didn’t have these problems, respectively. who experienced a decrease in sleep, who experienced an increase in sleep, and who did not wake up feeling rested experienced depressive symptoms 1.61, 3.22, 3.53, and 2.59 times more, respectively, than those who did not have insomnia, who did not experience a change in sleep habits in pregnancy, and who woke up feeling rested, respectively.Conclusion: This study determined that there is a relationship between insomnia and depressive symptoms and that pregnant women experiencing insomnia presented with more depressive symptoms.Keywords: Depressions, last trimester, pregnancy, sleep characteristics.

Abstract Objective On March 10, 2020, the Italian Government ordered a national lockdown to limit the viral transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 infections. This study investigated how these restrictive measures have impacted sleep quality, timing, and psychological difficulties in school-age children and their mothers during the lockdown. Methods In an online survey, 299 mothers reported their sleep habits, experience of time, and psychological difficulties as well as those of their children (6–10 years old) during and, retrospectively, before the lockdown. Results During the lockdown, children showed a marked delay in sleep timing—that is, later bedtime and rise time—and a mild worsening in sleep quality. They were less prone to respect daily routines or to keep track of the passage of time. They showed increased emotional, conduct, and hyperactive symptoms, and the increase in these psychological difficulties was predicted by the change in sleep quality, boredom, and mothers’ psychological difficulties. In addition, mothers showed a delayed sleep timing and worsening of sleep quality during the lockdown, in varying degrees depending on their working conditions. Mothers who kept working regularly outside their homes during lockdown reported more regular sleep patterns, whereas mothers who stopped working showed more emotional symptoms and relevant changes in their perception of time. Conclusions Overall, given the evidence of the adverse behavioral and psychological impact of home confinement and social restrictions, effective measures needed to be in place to mitigate long-term effects on children and their mothers, especially those who have had to stop working during lockdown.
