This paper is written in an effort to create a theoretical base for time-limited psychodynamic couple psychotherapy as it has evolved within the tradition of the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships in London. There is increasing demand for time limited couple psychotherapy within the public sector. The author considers it paramount that psychodynamic couple therapists establish a theoretical basis for time-limited couple intervention in order to be able to present an alternative model to more cognitive based couple interventions within the context of public sector expectations. Based on the theoretical ideas available and based on her clinical experience, the author attempts to formulate a theoretical basis for time-limited couple intervention.
