In an attempt to find an appropriate cutting tool for machining titanium alloys, performance of binderless cubic boron nitride tools is evaluated. This new cutting tool material is expected to be a breakthrough in machining titanium alloys.

This article illustrates the production method and mechanical & physical properties of polycrystal cubic boron nitride (PCBN) cutting tool material. As shown by the turning machining of hardened steel, cold-hardened cast iron and composite materials, PCBN cutting tool is superior in cutting performance to cemented carbide and ceramics cutting tools. In recent years, with great improvement in production process and overall mechanical properties of PCBN cutting tool material, it can effectively make rough machining of ferrous metal. This article contributes to the popularization and application of this cutting tool.

Electrical discharge grinding is part of the most widely used methods to machine polycrystalline cubic boron nitride cutting tool. Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride compact samples processed in domestic with different grain size are the research object. Electrode running speed, peak current, and pulse width are selected as the main process parameters. The material removal volume and electrode loss set as the evaluation index of productive efficiency; workpiece surface roughness value sets as an evaluation standard of processing quality. Through electrical discharge grinding experiments, combined with scanning electron microscopy observation, energy spectrum analyzer and roughness tester, the influences of the main process parameters on electrical discharge grinding are analyzed, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride compact electrical discharge grinding technics & mechanism are summarized.

Tool material has been one of the focuses in tool research. Diamond and cubic boron nitride (c-BN) are materials of exceptional and very similar properties that make them extremely valuable not only for the aesthetics of diamond. C-BN is a material synthesized rather recently that has rapidly spurred technological and scientific interest. Presently, both materials have found commercial applications. There is still a long way for the practical application of cBN film. The main problems are such as adhesion, thickness, purity, nucleating, and growth mechanism. We will develop a new way of DC plasma jet CVD way to synthesis the cBN film. The deposition of cBN films can be performed in a DC jet plasma CVD reactor by using an Ar-N2-BF3-H2 gas mixture, on the basis of deposition of diamond has been achieved.
