A Counterexample to Signal-to-Noise Ratio As a Measure of Design Robustness
Abstract Maximizing signal-to-noise ratio generates off-center designs that can be far from robust. To demonstrate this in engineering terms, a counterexample is constructed by relaxing a physically unnecessary constraint in Taguchi’s robust circuit design illustration. In this new case the badly off-center design obtained by maximizing signal-to-noise ratio is not even as robust as the worst of the centered designs. This did not occur in the original example because the artificial constraint, relaxed in the counterexample, fortuitously held the maximum signal-to-noise ratio design near the robust least variation design.
