Turbulence and Heat Transfer Measurements in an Inclined Large Scale Film Cooling Array: Part II—Temperature and Heat Transfer Measurements

The second of a two-part paper, this study focuses on the temperature field and surface heat transfer measurements on a large-scale models of an inclined row of film cooling holes. Detailed surface and flow field measurements were taken and presented in Part I. The model consists of three holes of 1.9-cm diameter that are spaced 3 hole diameters apart and inclined 30° from the surface. Additionally, another model with an anti-vortex adaptation to the film cooling holes is also tested. The coolant stream is metered and cooled to 20°C below the mainstream temperature. A thermocouple is used to obtain the flow temperatures along the jet centerline and at various streamwise locations. Steady state liquid crystal thermography is used to obtain surface heat transfer coefficients. Results are obtained for blowing ratios of up to 2 in order to capture off-design conditions in which the jet is lifted. Film cooling effectiveness values of 0.4 and 0.15 were found along the centerline for blowing ratios of 1 and 2 respectively. In addition, an anti-vortex design was tested and found to have improved film effectiveness. This paper presents the detailed temperature contours showing the extent of mixing between the coolant and freestream and the local heat transfer results.

The influence of uneven wall temperature on the local heat transfer coefficient in a rotating square channel with smooth walls and radial outward flow was investigated for Reynolds numbers from 2500 to 25,000 and rotation numbers from 0 to 0.352. The square channel, composed of six isolated copper sections, has a length-to-hydraulic diameter ratio of 12. The mean rotating radius to the channel hydraulic diameter ratio is kept at a constant value of 30. Three cases of thermal boundary conditions were studied: (A) four walls uniform temperature, (B) four walls uniform heat flux, and (C) leading and trailing walls hot and two side walls cold. The results show that the heat transfer coefficients on the leading surface are much lower than that of the trailing surface due to rotation. For case A of four walls uniform temperature, the leading surface heat transfer coefficient decreases and then increases with increasing rotation numbers, and the trailing surface heat transfer coefficient increases monotonically with rotation numbers. The decreased (or increased) heat transfer coefficients on the leading (or trailing) surface are due to the cross-stream and centrifugal buoyancy-induced flows from rotations. However, the trailing surface heat transfer coefficients, as well as those for the side walls, for case B are higher than for case A and the leading surface heat transfer coefficients for cases B and C are significantly higher than for case A. The results suggest that the local uneven wall temperature creates the local buoyancy forces, which change the effect of the rotation. Therefore, the local heat transfer coefficients on the leading, trailing, and side surfaces are altered by the uneven wall temperature.

An experimental investigation of film cooling on rough surfaces has been accomplished at a Reynolds number and dimensionless boundary layer momentum thickness found in current high performance first stage turbine vanes. A transient experimental method using thermochromic liquid crystals is employed to determine both local heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness values on planar rough surfaces. Two surface roughness configurations are investigated with a single row of cooling holes spaced three diameters apart and inclined 30° to the mainstream flow. The mainstream turbulence level at the point of film injection is 8.5% and the density ratio considered is approximately 1.0. The influence of roughness on the centerline film cooling effectiveness, laterally averaged film cooling effectiveness, laterally averaged heat transfer coefficients, as well as area averaged values are presented. It is found that the presence of roughness causes a decrease in the film cooling effectiveness over that of the smooth surface for the range of experimental parameters considered in this study. In addition, significant lateral smoothing in film cooling effectiveness distribution is observed for the rougher surfaces. Measured heat transfer coefficients on rough surfaces show a trend of monotonic increase with blowing ratio. However, such increase is not as great as that for the case of smooth surface.

Pressure-side discharge is commonly employed in turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes to keep the trailing edge metal temperatures within an allowable limit while minimizing aerodynamic penalties. Despite its widespread use, film-cooling data of the discharge slot are scarce in open literature. The objectives of the present experimental study were to measure detailed local heat transfer and film-cooling effectiveness from a 10x scale trailing-edge model of an industrial gas turbine airfoil in a low speed wind tunnel. To simulate the mainstream flow acceleration in vane and blade row passages, a linear velocity gradient was imposed using an adjustable top wall. The present work employed the composite slab quasi-steady liquid crystal method that allows measurements of local heat transfer coefficients and film-cooling effectiveness from two related tests. With this technique, the heat transfer measurement can be performed in a cold wind tunnel. The coolant-to-mainstream blowing ratio was varied between 0.25 and 1.0. The slot hydraulic diameter based Reynolds number ranged from 4,760 to 19,550. The coolant-to-mainstream density ratio was fixed at 0.95. Slot discharge coefficients were also measured with mainstream acceleration. Both local heat transfer coefficients and film-cooling effectiveness displayed a strong dependency on blowing ratio and mainstream acceleration. However, the discharge coefficients showed little dependency on the mainstream acceleration.

This paper experimentally studies the effect of transonic flow on local heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness distributions of a turbine vane’s suction surface with compound-angle shaped-hole configuration. A Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP) method is used to determine the local heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness simultaneously. Tests were performed in a five-vane annular-sector cascade blow-down facility. The exit Mach numbers are controlled to be 0.7 and 0.9, from subsonic to transonic conditions. Compressed air is used as coolant with a coolant-to-mainstream density ratio 0.91 on film cooling and heat transfer study. Three averaged coolant-to-mainstream blowing ratios in the range, 0.7, 1.0, and 1.6 are investigated. The test vane features three rows of radial-angle cylindrical holes around the leading edge, and two rows of compound-angle shaped holes on the suction side. Effects of blowing ratio and exit Mach number on the vane suction surface heat transfer and film cooling effectiveness distributions are obtained, and the results are presented and explained in this investigation.

The local heat transfer inside the entrance to large-scale models of film cooling holes has been measured using the transient heat transfer technique. The method employs temperature-sensitive liquid crystals to measure the surface temperature of large-scale perspex models. Full distributions of local Nusselt number were calculated based on the cooling passage centerline gas temperature ahead of the cooling hole. The circumferentially averaged Nusselt number was also calculated based on the local mixed bulk driving gas temperature to aid interpretation of the results, and to broaden the potential application of the data. Data are presented for a single film cooling hole inclined at 90 and 150 deg to the coolant duct wall. Both holes exhibited entry length heat transfer levels that were significantly lower than those predicted by entry length data in the presence of crossflow. The reasons for the comparative reduction are discussed in terms of the interpreted flow field.

As a part of a more complex research program systematic isothermal investigations on the aerodynamics and heat transfer of a large scale turbine cascade with suction side film cooling were carried out. The film cooling through a row of holes at forty percent chord length on the suction side was supplied by a large plenum chamber. Two injection geometries were hitherto tested and evaluated: cylindrical holes with thirty respectively fifty degrees axial inclination angle and no lateral inclination. Typical engine conditions for the Mach and Reynolds number as well as the inlet turbulence level were maintained. The aerodynamic studies are based on steady state pressure measurements. The static profile pressure distribution together with oil-and-dye flow visualisation gives information on the surface flow conditions and boundary layer development especially in the near hole region. The measured data also comprise local and integral total pressure loss coefficients obtained by pressure probe traversing at mid span downstream of the cascade. The heat transfer examination set-up is based on the steady state liquid crystal technique using a compound of a thermochromic sheet combined with an electrical surface heating layer attached on an adiabatic blade corpus. Two dimensional pseudo colour plots are used for the documentation of the local surface heat transfer coefficient distribution and hot spot estimation. Laterally averaged and statistically analysed data of the surface heat transfer is applied in overall heat transfer examinations. All this data is used for a joint aerodynamic flow and surface heat transfer optimisation of a blowing configuration in suction side film cooled turbine cascade. The most important conclusions can be summarised as follows: Aiming at an optimised design of cylindrical film cooling configurations the axial inclination of the holes should be kept low thus diminishing the suction peak value at the cooling position in the profile pressure distribution and decreasing the mainstream deceleration area upstream of the jets. This also leads to reduced total pressure losses. Through the high influence of the blowing on the aerodynamics the flow in the near hole mixing region is highly three-dimensional. This shows significant effects in the two-dimensional surface distribution and the laterally averaged heat transfer coefficient. Oil-and-dye pictures confirm the observations qualitatively.

A comprehensive set of generic experiments is conducted to investigate the interaction of film cooling rows. Five different film cooling configurations are considered on a large scale basis each consisting of two rows of film cooling holes in staggered arrangement. The hole pitch to diameter ratio within each row is kept constant at P/D = 4. The spacing between the rows is either x/D = 10, 20, or 30. Fanshaped holes or simple cylindrical holes with an inclination angle of 30 deg. and a hole length of 6 hole diameters are used. With a hot gas Mach number of Mam = 0.3, an engine like density ratio of ρc/ρm = 1.75, and a freestream turbulence intensity of Tu = 5.1% are established. Operating conditions are varied in terms of blowing ratio for the upstream and, independently, the downstream row in the range 0.5<M<2.0. The results illustrate the importance of considering ejection into an already film cooled boundary layer. Adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients are significantly increased. The decay of effectiveness with streamwise distance is much less pronounced downstream of the second row primarily due to pre-cooling of the boundary layer by the first row of holes. Additionally, a comparison of measured effectiveness data with predictions according to the widely used superposition model of Sellers [11] is given for two rows of fanshaped holes.

A four vane subsonic cascade was used to investigate the influence of film injection on vane heat transfer distributions in the presence of high turbulence. The influence of high turbulence on vane film cooling effectiveness and boundary layer development was also examined in part II of this paper. A high level, large scale inlet turbulence was generated for this study with a mock combustor (12 %) and was used to contrast results with a low level (1 %) of inlet turbulence. The three geometries chosen to study in this investigation were one row and two staggered rows of downstream cooling on both the suction and pressure surfaces in addition to a showerhead array. Film cooling was found to have only a moderate influence on the heat transfer coefficients downstream from arrays on the suction surface where the boundary layer was turbulent. However, film cooling was found to have a substantial influence on heat transfer downstream from arrays in laminar regions of the vane such as the pressure surface, the stagnation region, and the near suction surface. Generally, heat transfer augmentation was found to scale on velocity ratio. In relative terms, the augmentation in the laminar regions for the low turbulence case was found to be higher than the augmentation for the high turbulence case. The absolute levels of heat transfer were always found to be the highest for the high turbulence case.
