Heat Transfer for High Aspect Ratio Rectangular Channels in a Stationary Serpentine Passage With Turbulated and Smooth Surfaces

Heat transfer distributions are presented for a stationary three passage serpentine internal cooling channel for a range of engine representative Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the sidewalls of the serpentine passage is fixed and the aspect ratio (AR) is adjusted to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 by changing the distance between the top and bottom walls. Data are presented for aspect ratios of 1:1 and 1:6 for smooth passage walls and for aspect ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 for passages with two surfaces turbulated. For the turbulated cases, turbulators skewed 45° to the flow are installed on the top and bottom walls. The square turbulators are arranged in an offset parallel configuration with a fixed rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) of 10 and a rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/Dh) range of 0.100 to 0.058 for AR 1:1 to 1:6, respectively. The experiments span a Reynolds number range of 4,000 to 130,000 based on the passage hydraulic diameter. While this experiment utilizes a basic layout similar to previous research, it is the first to run an aspect ratio as large as 1:6, and it also pushes the Reynolds number to higher values than were previously available for the 1:2 aspect ratio. The results demonstrate that while the normalized Nusselt number for the AR 1:2 configuration changes linearly with Reynolds number up to 130,000, there is a significant change in flow behavior between Re = 25,000 and Re = 50,000 for the aspect ratio 1:6 case. This suggests that while it may be possible to interpolate between points for different flow conditions, each geometric configuration must be investigated independently. The results show the highest heat transfer and the greatest heat transfer enhancement are obtained with the AR 1:6 configuration due to greater secondary flow development for both the smooth and turbulated cases. This enhancement was particularly notable for the AR 1:6 case for Reynolds numbers at or above 50,000.

This paper presents a numerical investigation on forced convection in a cavity with one inlet and two outlet ports. For the present study three different aspect ratios between height (H) and length (L), (H ≠ L)were considered (AR = H/L), AR = 1, 1.3 and 2.5. Different conditions and geometric arrays for the position of the ports are analyzed. The walls of the cavity are considered to be isothermal warming-up the incoming cold fluid. A Reynolds number range of 10 < Re < 500 is considered, clearly within the laminar regimen. The flow and temperature fields are obtained as part of the solution. As expected, the aspect ratio affects the flow behavior in the cavity. An increment of vorticity leads to a heat transfer enhancement. The different aspect ratios of the cavity and the effect of the outlet ports and their location are discussed.

Turbine blade cooling is imperative in advanced aircraft engines. The extremely hot gases that operate within the turbine section require turbine blades to be cooled by a complex cooling circuit. This cooling arrangement increases engine efficiency and ensures blade materials a longer creep life. One principle aspect of the circuit involves serpentine internal cooling passes throughout the core of the blade. Roughening the inside surfaces of these cooling passages with turbulence promoters provides enhanced heat transfer rates from the surface. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of rotation, aspect ratio, and turbulator roughness on heat transfer in these rib-roughened passages. The investigation was performed in an orthogonally rotating setup to simulate the actual rotation of the cooling passages. Single-pass channels, roughened on two opposite walls, with turbulators positioned at 45 deg angle to the flow, in a criss-cross arrangement, were studied throughout this experiment. The ribs were arranged such that their pitch-to-height ratio remained at a constant value of 10. An aspect ratio of unity was investigated under three different rib blockage ratios (turbulator height/channel hydraulic diameter) of 0.1333, 0.25, and 0.3333. A channel with an aspect ratio of 2 was also investigated for a blockage ratio of 0.25. Air was flown radially outward over a Reynolds number range of 15,000 to 50,000. The rotation number was varied from 0 to 0.3. Stationary and rotating cases of identical geometries were compared. Results indicated that rotational effects are more pronounced in turbulated passages of high aspect and low blockage ratios for which a steady increase in heat transfer coefficient is observed on the trailing side as rotation number increases while the heat transfer coefficient on the leading side shows a steady decrease with rotation number. However, the all-smooth-wall classical pattern of heat transfer coefficient variation on the leading and trailing sides is not followed for smaller aspect ratios and high blockage ratios when the relative artificial roughness is high.

Computational analysis of transient phenomenon followed by the periodic state of laminar flow and heat transfer due to a rectangular rotating object in a square cavity is investigated. A finite-volume-based fixed-grid/sliding mesh computational methodology utilizing primitive variables is used. Rectangular rotating objects with different aspect ratios (AR = 1, 2, 3, 4) are placed in the middle of a square cavity. The motionless object is set in rotation at time t = 0 with a constant angular velocity. For the insulated and isothermal objects, the cavity is maintained as differentially-heated and isothermal enclosures, respectively. Natural convection heat transfer is neglected. For a given shape of the object and a constant angular velocity, a range of rotating Reynolds numbers are covered for a Pr = 5 fluid. The Reynolds numbers were selected so that the flow field is not affected by the Taylor instabilities (Ta &lt; 1750). The periodic flow field, the interaction of the rotating objects with the recirculating vortices at the four corners and the periodic channelling effect of the traversing vertices are clearly elucidated. The corresponding thermal fields in relation to the evolving flow patterns and the skewness of the temperature contours in comparison to conduction-only case were discussed. The skewness is observed to become more marked as the Reynolds number is lowered. Transient variations of the average Nusselt numbers of the respective systems show that for high Re numbers, a quasi-periodic behavior due to the onset of the Taylor instabilities is dominant, whereas for low Re numbers, periodicity of the system is clearly observed. Time-integrated average Nusselt numbers of the insulated and isothermal object systems were correlated to the rotational Reynolds number and the aspect ratio of the rectangle. For high Re numbers, the performance of the system is independent of the aspect ratio. On the other hand, with lowering of the hydraulic diameter (i.e. bigger objects), objects with the highest and lowest aspect ratios exhibit the highest and lowest heat transfer, respectively. High intensity of the periodic channelling and not its frequency are identified as the cause of the observed enhancement.

The internal cooling channels of an advanced gas turbine blade typically have varying aspect ratios from one pass to another due to the varying thickness of the blade profile. Most of the fundamental internal cooling studies found in the open literature used a fixed aspect ratio for multi-pass channels. Studies on a reduced cross-section and aspect ratio channel are scarce. The current study features a two-pass rectangular channel with an aspect ratio AR = 4:1 in the first pass and an AR = 2:1 in the second pass after a 180 deg tip turn. In addition to the smooth-wall case, ribs with a profiled cross-section are placed at 60 deg to the flow direction on both the leading and trailing surfaces in both passages (P/e = 10, e/Dh ≈ 0.11, parallel and inline). Regionally averaged heat transfer measurement method was used to obtain the heat transfer coefficients on all surfaces within the flow passages. The Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 10,000 to 70,000 in the first passage, and the rotational speed ranges from 0 to 400 rpm. Under pressurized condition (570 kPa), the highest rotation number achieved was Ro = 0.39 in the first passage and 0.16 in the second passage. Rotation effects on both heat transfer and pressure loss coefficient for the smooth and rib-roughened cases are presented. The results showed that the turn induced secondary flows are reduced in an accelerating flow. The effects of rotation on heat transfer are generally weakened in the ribbed case than the smooth case. Significant heat transfer reduction on the tip wall was seen in both the smooth and ribbed cases under rotating condition. A reduced overall pressure penalty was seen for the ribbed case under rotation. Reynolds number effect was found noticeable in the current study. The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics are sensitive to the geometrical design of the channel and should be taken into account in the design process.

CFD simulations were performed to study the flow and heat transfer in a U-duct, relevant to internal cooling of the first-stage turbine component in electric-power-generation, gas-turbine engines. Parameters studied include (1) two aspect ratios of the duct cross section, i.e. H/W = 1 and H/W = 0.25; (2) smooth duct and duct lined with pin fins of height H arranged in a staggered fashion; and (3) two rotational speeds: 0 rpm and 3,600 rpm. In all cases, the wall temperature is 1173 K; the coolant temperature at the U-duct inlet is 623 K; and the back pressure at the exit of the U-duct is 25.17 atm. The Reynolds numbers studied are 150,000 for the duct with the 4-to-1 aspect ratio, and 150,000 and 375,000 for the duct with the 1-to-1 aspect ratio. When there is rotation at 3,600 rpm, the rotational numbers corresponding to these Reynolds numbers and duct aspect ratios are 0.592, 1.64, and 4.11, respectively. Result is presented to show the nature of the flow, the temperature distribution, and the surface heat transfer with focus on the flow and heat transfer in the tip-turn region as a function of the parameters investigated. This computational study is based on 3-D steady RANS. The ensemble-averaged continuity, compressible Navier-Stokes, and energy equations were closed by the thermally perfect equation of state with temperature-dependent gas properties and the two-equation realizeable k-ε turbulence model with and without wall functions.

The performance of many engineering devices from power electronics to gas turbines is limited by thermal management. Heat transfer augmentation in internal flows is commonly achieved through the use of pin fins, which increase both surface area and turbulence. The present research is focused on internal cooling of turbine airfoils using a single row of circular pin fins that is oriented perpendicular to the flow. Low aspect ratio pin fins were studied whereby the channel height to pin diameter was unity. A number of spanwise spacings were investigated for a Reynolds number range between 5000 to 30,000. Both pressure drop and spatially-resolved heat transfer measurements were taken. The heat transfer measurements were made on the endwall of the pin fin array using infrared thermography and on the pin surface using discrete thermocouples. The results show that the heat transfer augmentation relative to open channel flow is the highest for smallest spanwise spacings and lowest Reynolds numbers. The results also indicate that the pin fin heat transfer is higher than the endwall heat transfer.

Local flow behavior and heat transfer results are presented from two swirl chambers, which model passages used to cool the leading edges of turbine blades in gas turbine engines. Flow results are obtained in an isothermal swirl chamber. Surface Nusselt number distributions are measured in a second swirl chamber (with a constant wall heat flux boundary condition) using infrared thermography in conjunction with thermocouples, energy balances, and in situ calibration procedures. In both cases, Reynolds numbers Re based on inlet duct characteristics range from 6000 to about 20,000. Bulk helical flow is produced in each chamber by two inlets, which are tangent to the swirl chamber circumference. Important changes to local and globally averaged surface Nusselt numbers, instantaneous flow structure from flow visualizations, and distributions of static pressure, total pressure, and circumferential velocity are observed throughout the swirl chambers as the Reynolds number increases. Of particular importance are increases of local surface Nusselt numbers (as well as ones globally averaged over the entire swirl chamber surface) with increasing Reynolds number. These are tied to increased advection, as well as important changes to vortex characteristics near the concave surfaces of the swirl chambers. Higher Re also give larger axial components of velocity, and increased turning of the flow from each inlet, which gives Go¨rtler vortex pair trajectories greater skewness as they are advected downstream of each inlet. Abstract In this paper, experimental and numerical investigations of three variants of internal cooling configurations — dimples only, ribs only and ribs with dimples have been explored at process conditions (96°C and 207bar) with sCO2 as the coolant. The designs were chosen based on a review of advanced internal cooling features typically used for air-breathing gas turbines. The experimental study described in this paper utilizes additively manufactured square channels with the cooling features over a range of Reynolds number from 80,000 to 250,000. Nusselt number is calculated in the experiments utilizing the Wilson Plot method and three heat transfer characteristics — augmentation in Nusselt number, friction factor and overall Thermal Performance Factor (TPF) are reported. To explore the effect of surface roughness introduced due to additive manufacturing, two baseline channel flow cases are considered — a conventional smooth tube and an additively manufactured square tube. A companion computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is also performed for the corresponding cooling configurations reported in the experiments using the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) based turbulence model. Both experimental and computational results show increasing Nusselt number augmentation as higher Reynolds numbers are approached, whereas prior work on internal cooling of air-breathing gas turbines predict a decay in the heat transfer enhancement as Reynolds number increases. Comparing cooling features, it is observed that the “ribs only” and “ribs with dimples” configurations exhibit higher Nusselt number augmentation at all Reynolds numbers compared to the “dimples only” and the “no features” configurations. However, the frictional losses are almost an order of magnitude higher in presence of ribs.
