A Heat Transfer Correlation of Flow Boiling In Micro-Finned Helically Coiled Tube

In the research of intube flow boiling, a widely accepted factor is that there are two main mechanisms participating in the heat transfer. One is nucleate boiling, which is dependent on the presence of active nuclei on the heated wall and the heat transfer coefficient is much influenced by the heat flux, much similar to pool boiling. In the other heat transfer mode, the boiling nuclei are fully suppressed and heat is transferred by the liquid evaporation through the interface of liquid film and vapor core. This is also called forced convective evaporation or convective boiling. In the evaporation region, the dependence of heat transfer on heat flux is not distinct and governed mainly by the mass flux and vapor quality. In the open literature on convective boiling heat transfer of refrigerant researches have been extensively conducted in straight tube. The studies, however, on two-phase flow boiling heat transfer in helically coiled tube are far less than that in straight tube. Because of the high efficiency in heat transfer and compactness in volume, helically coiled tubes are used extensively in practical industries. Therefore, it is important for application to obtain the correlations of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient in helically coiled tube. A new kind of micro-finned helically coiled tube was developed by the present authors and the flow boiling heat transfer characteristics are experimental studied in this paper, using R134a, an environment-friendly refrigerant as experimental fluid. By introducing convective boiling number NCB, as suggested by V. V. Klimenko (in Ref. [8]), the transition boundary between nucleate boiling and forced convective boiling in helically coiled tube is examined, which is much different with that in straight tube. Based on the analysis of the mechanisms of flow boiling, heat transfer correlation of the specific micro-finned helically coiled tubes is obtained, which has a mean absolute deviation of 13.8%.

Flow boiling heat transfer to water in microchannels is experimentally investigated. The dimensions of the microchannels considered are 275×636 and 406×1063μm2. The experiments are conducted at inlet water temperatures in the range of 67–95°C and mass fluxes of 221–1283kg∕m2s. The maximum heat flux investigated in the tests is 129W∕cm2 and the maximum exit quality is 0.2. Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients are measured and compared to predictions from existing correlations for larger channels. While an existing correlation was found to provide satisfactory prediction of the heat transfer coefficient in subcooled boiling in microchannels, saturated boiling was not well predicted by the correlations for macrochannels. A new superposition model is developed to correlate the heat transfer data in the saturated boiling regime in microchannel flows. In this model, specific features of flow boiling in microchannels are incorporated while deriving analytical solutions for the convection enhancement factor and nucleate boiling suppression factor. Good agreement with the experimental measurements indicates that this model is suitable for use in analyzing boiling heat transfer in microchannel flows.

Abstract The effect of solid particle introduction on subcooled-forced flow boiling heat transfer and a critical heat flux was examined experimentally. In the experiment, glass beads of 0.6 mm diameter were mixed in subcooled water. Experiments were conducted in a range of the subcooling of 40 K, a velocity of 0.17–6.7 m/s, a volumetric particle ratio of 0–17%. When particles were introduced, the growth of a superheated liquid layer near a heat trasnsfer surface seemed to be suppressed and the onset of nucleate boiling was delayed. The particles promoted the condensation of bubbles on the heat transfer surface, which shifted the initiation of a net vapor generation to a high heat flux region. Boiling heat trasnfer was augmented by the particle introduction. The suppression of the growth of the superheated liquid layer and the promotion of bubble condensation and dissipation by the particles seemed to contribute that heat transfer augmentation. The wall superheat at the critical heat flux was elevated by the particle introduction and the critical heat flux itself was also enhanced. However, the degree of the critical heat flux improvement was not drastic.

Experiments of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient of FC-72 were carried out over simulated silicon chip of 10×10×0.5 mm3 for electronic cooling. Four kinds of micro-pin-fins with the dimensions of 30×60, 30×120, 50×60, 50×120 μm2 (thickness, t × height, h) respectively, were fabricated on the chip surfaces by the dry etching technique to enhance boiling heat transfer. A smooth chip was also tested for comparison. The experiments were conducted at three different fluid velocities (0.5, 1 and 2m/s) and three different liquid subcoolings (15, 25 and 35K). All micro-pin-finned surfaces show a considerable heat transfer enhancement compared to the smooth surface. Both the forced convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer contribute to the total heat transfer performance. The contribution of each factor to the total heat transfer has been clearly presented in the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient curves. In a lower heat flux region, the heat transfer coefficient increases greatly with increasing fluid velocity, but increases slightly with increasing heat flux, indicating that the single-phase forced convection dominates the heat transfer process. With further increasing heat flux to the onset of nucleate boiling, the heat transfer coefficient increases remarkably. For a given liquid subcooling, the curves of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient at fluid velocities of 0.5 and 1 m/s almost follow one line for each surface, showing insensitivity of nucleate boiling heat transfer to fluid velocity. However, at the largest fluid velocity of 2 m/s, the slope of the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient curves for micro-pin-finned surfaces becomes smaller, indicating that the forced convection also plays an important role besides the nucleate boiling heat transfer. The curves of the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient can be used to determine the boiling incipience at different fluid velocities, which provides a basis for the suitable fluid velocity selection in designing highly efficient cooling scheme for electronic devices.

In this study, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide with a PAG-type lubricating oil entrained from 0 to 5 wt% in a horizontally placed smooth tube with an inner diameter of 2 mm were experimentally investigated under the following operating conditions: mass fluxes from 170 to 320 kg/m2s, heat fluxes from 4.5 to 36 kW/m2, and a saturation temperature of 15 °C. The results show that for a low oil concentration of approximately 0.5% to 1%, no further deterioration of the heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher oil concentrations in spite of a significant decrement of the heat transfer coefficient compared to that under an oil-free condition. The heat flux still had a positive influence on the heat transfer coefficient in low quality regions. However, no obvious influence was observed in high quality regions, which implies that nucleate boiling dominates in the low quality region whereas it is suppressed in the high quality regions. Unlike the mass flux under an oil-free condition, mass flux has a significant influence on the heat transfer coefficient, with a maximum increase of 50% in the heat transfer. On the basis of our experimental measurements of the flow boiling heat transfer of carbon dioxide under wide experimental conditions, a flow boiling heat transfer model for horizontal tubes has been proposed for a mixture of CO2 and polyalkylene glycol (PAG oil) in the pre-dryout region, with consideration of the thermodynamic properties of the mixture. The surface tension and viscosity of the mixture were particularly taken into account. New factors were introduced into the correlation to reflect the suppressive effects of the mass flux and the oil on both the nucleate boiling. It is shown that the calculated results can depict the influence of the mass flux and the heat flux on both nucleate boiling and convection boiling.

Flow boiling heat transfer characteristics of CO2 with and without oil were investigated experimentally in horizontal smooth and enhanced tubes with an inner diameter of 11.2 mm. The visualization of flow pattern provides a detailed attributes of the nucleate and the convective boiling heat transfer. In order to investigate the effect of the miscible oil on the heat transfer of CO2, POE (polyolester) RENSIO C85E oil is added to give an oil circulation rate (OCR) between 0.5% and 2%. Results are compared with those of pure CO2. The experimental conditions include evaporation temperatures of −15 °C, mass fluxes from 40 to 200 kg/m2 s, heat fluxes from 0.5 to 10 kW/m2, and vapor qualities from 0.1 to 0.8. Oil generally deteriorates the heat transfer coefficient of pure CO2. The reduction in heat transfer coefficient is most apparent at low vapor qualities, 0.1 to 0.4, and at low mass fluxes, 100 and 200 kg/m2. It is caused by the suppression of nucleate boiling due to increased surface tension. At conditions where the convective boiling contribution is dominant, vapor qualities above 0.5, oil increases heat transfer coefficients. Through visualization, it is shown that the wetted area on the perimeter of inner tube is enhanced due to formation of foaming in the smooth tube. However, such enhancement of heat transfer due to forming is negligible in the enhanced tube, because the enhanced factor due to micro-finned structures is dominant.

Single-phase convective heat transfer of nanofluids has been studied extensively, and different degrees of enhancement were observed over the base fluids, whereas there is still debate on the improvement in overall thermal performance when both heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics are considered. Meanwhile, very few studies have been devoted to investigating two-phase heat transfer of nanofluids, and it remains inconclusive whether the same pessimistic outlook should be expected. In this work, an experimental study of forced convective flow boiling and two-phase flow was conducted for Al2O3–water nanofluids through a minichannel. General flow boiling heat transfer characteristics were measured, and the effects of nanofluids on the onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) were studied. Two-phase flow instabilities were also explored with an emphasis on the transition boundaries of onset of flow instabilities (OFI). It was found that the presence of nanoparticles delays ONB and suppresses OFI, and the extent is correlated to the nanoparticle volume concentration. These effects were attributed to the changes in available nucleation sites and surface wettability as well as thinning of thermal boundary layers in nanofluid flow. Additionally, it was observed that the pressure-drop type flow instability prevails in two-phase flow of nanofluids, but with reduced amplitude in pressure, temperature, and mass flux oscillations.

A simple correlation was developed earlier by Kandlikar (1983) for predicting saturated flow boiling heat transfer coefficients inside horizontal and vertical tubes. It was based on a model utilizing the contributions due to nucleate boiling and convective mechanisms. It incorporated a fluid-dependent parameter Ffl in the nucleate boiling term. The predictive ability of the correlation for different refrigerants was confirmed by comparing it with the recent data on R-113 by Jensen and Bensler (1986) and Khanpara et al. (1986). In the present work, the earlier correlation is further refined by expanding the data base to 5246 data points from 24 experimental investigations with ten fluids. The proposed correlation, equations (4) and (5), along with the constants given in Tables 3 and 4, gives a mean deviation of 15.9 percent with water data, and 18.8 percent with all refrigerant data, and it also predicts the correct hTP versus x trend as verified with water and R-113 data. Additional testing with recent R-22 and R-113 data yielded the lowest mean deviations among correlations tested. The proposed correlation can be extended to other fluids by evaluating the fluid-dependent parameter Ffl for that fluid from its flow boiling or pool boiling data.
