Abstract Resultative predicates have the aspectual effect of telicizing an atelic activity verb. The function of the postverbal constituent in accomplishments has been taken to be one of providing an end point to the activity, or of a constituent that "measures out" the event denoted by the activity verb. In either case, it delimits the event by providing it with boundaries. Looking at resultative predicates, we observe that they are subject to the requirement that they denote a bounded scale. This requirement is argued to be empirically superior to an alternative restriction stating that the resultative must be a stage-level predicate. The boundedness requirement furthermore provides direct evidence against an approach that treats the resultative as an end point, and supports the claim that it is an event measure. One piece of evidence concerns the 'make + NP+Adjective' construction, in which the adjective denotes the final stage or end point in a change of state, exactly as in the resultative construction. In contrast to the resultative, however, the adjective can be unbounded, as it is not an event measure in this case. We argue that the boundedness requirement on resultative predicates follows directly from treating it as an event measure, since a measure must be bounded as a matter of conceptual necessity.

Kita (1999) compares Japanese and English Enter/Exit verbs in spatial expressions, and argues that Japanese Enter/Exit verbs lack semantic encoding of motion. He claims that this runs counter to the view which considers motion and location to be primitives in the semantics of spatial expressions; instead, he proposes that discrete change of state should be included in the set of primitives. In this reply,I will first show that Kita’s evidence does not support lack of motion in Japanese Enter/Exit verbs, but that instead these verbs do pattern with motion verbs in the language, where conflation of motion is not disputable. I finally demonstrate that Kita’s claim about change of state may be well taken, but it should be put in a larger context of regular polysemy.

Abstract Se constructions designate a set of polysemous constructions along a transitivity continuum marked by the clitic se that perform various functions: reflexive/reciprocal, middle, anticausative, passive, and impersonal. A counterpart of these constructions without the clitic – the null se construction – is also attested. Based on an extensive usage-feature and profile-based analysis, and using multivariate statistical methods, we analyze, considering Cognitive Grammar, the conceptual, structural, and lectal factors that determine the choice between overt and null se constructions. The results of the study show that the null constructions are far more frequent in Brazilian (BP) than in European Portuguese (EP). In BP, the focus on the moment of change is a crucial factor for the overt/null variation in reflexive/reciprocal, middle, anticausative, and impersonal constructions. If the moment of the change of state is profiled, the overt se construction is usually produced. If the moment of change is not profiled, the null se construction is preferred. External factors also play a role in the variation. Register is an important predictor for the observed variation of the anticausative construction, and the only predictor for the overt/null variation in the case of the passive construction. In EP, the null se variant is mainly limited to anticausative constructions. In all cases of null constructions, there is a shift to an absolute construal, which has an impact on the way that the transitivity continuum is conceptualized.

The technology of radiation-resistant CMOS VLSI is based on industrial IC technology. The design uses feedback circuits and guard rings to compensate for single effects of cosmic particles (SEE). In most critical cases, these influences in digital circuits lead to single faults (SEU), which temporarily disrupt the state of memory cells, to latching (SEL), and in the long term to a catastrophic change of state. Various space programs confirm great prospects for their use in future space structures. The article discusses the effects of using radiation-resistant CMOS technology, technology based on a silicon-on-sapphire structure, CMOS technology on an insulating substrate taking into account typical characteristics, SIMOX-SOI technology, which consists in separation by implantation of oxygen ions. In new designs of circuits, more advanced algorithms should be implemented for the future.

Abstract The first part of a program to obtain reliable data on the rate of heat transfer to air moving at supersonic speeds in a tube has been devoted to measurements made on adiabatic supersonic flow of air in a tube. The details of these measurements have been described in a previous paper. The calculated quantities such as the local apparent friction coefficient, recovery factor, Mach number, and so forth, were obtained from the simple one-dimensional flow model for which the properties of the stream are uniform at any section, and boundary-layer effects are ignored. The analysis of some of the same data given in the previous paper is undertaken here with the aid of a simplified two-dimensional flow model. The supersonic flow in the tube is divided into a supersonic core of variable mass with the fluid remaining in the core undergoing a reversible adiabatic change of state, and a laminar boundary layer of variable mass. The compressible laminar boundary layer increases in thickness in the direction of flow, and then undergoes a transition to a turbulent boundary layer. The two-dimensional flow model is limited here to the region where a laminar boundary layer appears to be present in the entrance region of the tube. The results of the analysis based on the two-dimensional flow model indicate that where the flow in the tube boundary layer appears to be laminar, the measured pressures and temperatures in the tube for adiabatic supersonic flow of air could have been predicted, with sufficient accuracy for engineering problems, from measured data for supersonic flow of air over a flat plate with a laminar boundary layer, and with zero pressure gradient.

This paper proposes a dynamic image-based visual servoing (IBVS) control law for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a single fixed on-board camera facing downward. The motion control problem is to regulate the relative lateral position of the vehicle to a stationary target located on the ground. The control law is termed dynamic as it is based on the dynamics and kinematics of the vehicle. The proposed design uses a nonlinear input-dependent change of state coordinates and its error dynamics are proven to be locally exponentially stable with an estimate provided for the region of attraction. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate the method's ease of on-board implementation, performance, and robustness. The simulation and experimental results include a comparison with an established dynamic IBVS method. This comparison shows the proposed method can provide similar performance with the benefit of reduced complexity.
