Hip Injury Profile and Time Missed From Participation in Male National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Baseball Athletes

Context: It is important to examine hip injury characteristics in baseball athletes in order to develop injury-specific prevention protocols. There is currently a lack of literature regarding collegiate baseball athletes. Objective: To report the hip injury characteristics and time missed from sport participation in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I baseball players over a period of 5 years. Results: Forty-seven hip–groin injuries were recorded in 30 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I baseball players. Pitchers had the highest number of hip–groin injuries (24/47, 51%), and outfielders had the longest time missed from baseball participation (33 days on average). The two most common types of hip–groin injuries were femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (14/47, 30%) and hip adductor strain (14/47, 30%). Days missed from baseball participation was 4.5 days (range: 4–7) for short-term injuries and 90 days (range: 46–131) for long-term injuries. Interpretations: Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and adductor muscle strain were the predominant diagnoses in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I baseball players with hip–groin injury; short-term injuries resulted in ∼5 days missed but recovery from a long-term injury took ∼3 months. Pitchers had the highest number of injuries (including adductor strain and femoroacetabular impingement syndrome).

The purpose of this longitudinal, descriptive study was to observe changes in maximal strength measured via isometric clean grip mid-thigh pull and home runs (total and home runs per game) across three years of training and three competitive seasons for four National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 baseball players. A one-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, revealing significant univariate effects of time for peak force (PF) (p = 0.003) and peak force allometrically scaled (PFa) (p = 0.002). Increases in PF were noted from season 1 to season 2 (p = 0.031) and season 3 (p = 0.004), but season 2 was not significantly different than season 3 (p = 0.232). Additionally, increases in PFa were noted from season 1 to season 2 (p = 0.010) and season 3 (p < 0.001), but season 2 was not significantly different than season 3 (p = 0.052). Home runs per game rose from the 2009 (0.32) to 2010 season (1.35) and dropped during the 2011 season (1.07). A unique aspect of the study involves 2010 being the season in which ball-bat coefficient of restitution (BBCOR) bats were introduced to the NCAA competition.

AbstractFemoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is commonly associated with acetabular labral tears. Correction of impingement morphology and suture anchor repair of labral tears have demonstrated successful early and midterm patient-reported outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the posterior and anterior extent and size of labral tears in patients with FAIS undergoing arthroscopic labral repair, and to evaluate the number of suture anchors required to repair these tears. The design of this study was retrospective case series (Level 4). A single surgeon's operative database was retrospectively reviewed to identify patients undergoing primary arthroscopic hip labral repair between November 2014 and September 2019. Patient-specific factors and radiographic measurements were recorded. Arthroscopic findings including labral tear posterior and anterior extents, and the number of suture anchors utilized for the repair were recorded. Linear regression was performed to identify factors associated with labral tear size. The number of suture anchors used relative to labral tear size was calculated. Three-hundred and thirteen patients were included in the study. The mean posterior and anterior extent for labral tears were 11:22 ± 52 and 2:20 ± 34 minutes, respectively. Mean tear size was 2 hours, 58 minutes ± 45 minutes. The mean number of suture anchors utilized for labral repair was 3.1 ± 0.7. The mean number of anchors per hour of labral tear was 1.1 ± 0.3. Increased age, lateral center edge angle, and α angle were associated with larger labral tears. Our study found that acetabular labral tears associated with FAIS are, on average, 3 hours in size and centered in the anterosuperior quadrant of the acetabulum. Arthroscopic labral repair required 1.1 anchors per hour of tear size, resulting in a mean of 3.1 anchors per repair. Level of Evidence IV
