Morphology of two deep-sea Olivella from the southwestern Atlantic, with a record of a radula-less Olivellinae species (Neogastropoda: Olivoidea: Olividae)

Corallimorpharians are a relative small group of anthozoan cnidarians, also known as jewel sea anemones. They resemble actiniarian sea anemones in lacking a skeleton and being solitary, but resemble scleractinian corals in external and internal morphology, and they are considered to be the sister group of the stony corals. Corynactis carnea (=Sphincteractis sanmatiensis) is a small, common and eye catching species that inhabits the shallow water of northern Patagonia and the Argentinean shelf up to 200 m depth. Corallimorphus rigidus is registered for the first time from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. It is a rather big and rare species that inhabits only the deep sea. Only two specimens were found at 2934 m depth in Mar del Plata submarine canyon, in an area under the influence of the Malvinas current, which may explain its occurrence. These two species are the only two known jewel sea anemones in the Argentinean sea and are reported and described herein.

A new genus and species of the family Phoxocephalidae is here described with material collected during the Mini Biological Trawl Project at 224 and 500 m depth off Brazil’s southeastern coast in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Atlantiphoxus wajapi n. gen., n. sp. can be grouped in the subfamily Phoxocephalinae and seems to be morphologically close to Fuegiphoxus Barnard and Barnard, 1980 and Parharpinia Stebbing, 1899. However it can be easily distinguished within the phoxocephalids by the following characters: deep pereonites with small coxae; rostrum unconstricted; eyes absent; man­dible molar not triturative, but as a small hump with 3 multicuspidate stout setae; pereopods 3-4 with stout dactylus; pereopod 5 basis strongly tapering distally; pereopod 7 basis anterodistal corner with a row of long plumose setae; dactylus elongate. Epimeral plate 3 posteroventral margin strongly produced.

We describe seven species of Pilargidae from the coast and deep sea (300–1400 m deep) of southeastern Brazil, belonging to the genera Ancistrosyllis McIntosh, 1878, Cabira Webster, 1879, Glyphohesione Friedrich, 1950, Hermundura Müller, 1858, and Pilargis Saint-Joseph, 1899. Of those, two are new species (Glyphohesione campensis sp. nov. and Pilargis falconae sp. nov.) and two are new records of Ancistrosyllis for Brazil. Glyphohesione campensis sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by fewer neurochaetae, the anteriormost appearance of first notopodial spines, and intermediate relative length of dorsal and ventral cirri. Pilargis falconae sp. nov. is diagnosed by the presence of parapodial glands from the first chaetiger on the dorsal surface and from the sixth chaetiger on the ventral surface; and neurochaetae smooth capillaries and limbates with unidentate tips. Keys to pilargid species reported from, or likely to occur in, Brazilian waters are provided.
