In several teleosts, 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) has been identified as a maturation-inducing steroid. DHP is synthesized from 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) by 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 12-like (hsd17b12L). Along with 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/Δ5-4 isomerase (3β-HSD), 17α-hydroxylase and C17-20 lyase are associated with 17OHP production. This study aimed to determine the roles of Amur sturgeon hsd3b, P450c17-I (cyp17a1), and P450c17-II (cyp17a2) in 17OHP production and to examine their enzyme activity and mRNA expression pattern during oocyte maturation. In the sturgeons used in this study, hsd3b encoded 3β-HSD, cyp17a1 catalyzed 17α-hydroxylase production with C17-20 lyase activity, and cyp17a2 processed 17α-hydroxylase activity alone. In the ovarian follicles of individuals that underwent induced ovulation, hsd3b mRNA levels increased rapidly, cyp17a1 expression was downregulated, and cyp17a2 expression was upregulated during oocyte maturation. Finally, an in vitro study revealed that salmon pituitary extract (SPE) stimulation rapidly induced hsd3b expression, whereas cyp17a1 expression was downregulated. In vitro, cyp17a2 expression did not rapidly increase with SPE stimulation. This rapid upregulation of hsd3b during oocyte maturation was first observed in teleosts. It was suggested that hsd17b12L expression is upregulated after 17OHP production, which is regulated by hsd3b, cyp17a1, and cyp17a2, resulting in DHP production.

1. Bile salts of the sturgeons Acipenser guldenstaedti Brandt, Acipenser stellatus Pall and Huso huso L. and of the paddlefish Polyodon spathula Walbaum are shown to be closely similar, consisting mainly of taurocholate with minor amounts of tauroallocholate and the monosulphates of bile alcohols. The bile alcohols, comprising less than 10% of the bile salts, are mixtures with high proportions of substances resembling C27 tetrols and of C27 pentols, including 5β-cyprinol and (probably) 5α-cyprinol. 2. 5β-Cyprinol (3α,7α,12α,26,27-pentahydroxy-5β-cholestane) was made from cholic acid via 3α,7α,12α-triacetoxy-5β-cholan-24-ol in an overall yield of about 0·8%. 3. The chemical nature of chondrostean bile salts agrees with the systematic position of the fishes and suggests further correspondence between evolution at the morphological and molecular levels.

Before the conclusion of his great work on Fossil Fishes, Pro­fessor Agassiz recognized in some fragmentary remains found in the lias strata at Lyme Regis, unmistakeable evidence of the existence, at that period of the earth’s deposition, of a representative of the still extant family of the Sturgeons. To this extinct fish he assigned the name Chondrosteus . The author of the present memoir has been enabled, by the examination of numerous specimens more recently acquired, to describe in some detail the external features of the fish, and the structural peculiarities of those portions of the exo- and endo-skeleton which have been preserved. In the former respect the fossil differs from the recent sturgeon in having a shorter and deeper trunk, in the greater vertical expanse and wider diver­gence of the lobes of the caudal fin, in the median position of the dorsal fin, and in the absence of dermal plates on the back, belly, and flanks. Before describing the cranial anatomy, the author points out certain homologies between the head-plates of the recent sturgeon and the epicranial bones of the teleostean fishes, more especially with reference to the parietals, mastoids and frontals; and explains that these conclusions have resulted from the examination of the inner table of skull, where the relative position and propor­tions of the component plates are constant, however much the outer or dermal layer may vary. The remainder of the memoir is devoted to detailed descriptions of such parts as are preserved in the several specimens; and the author concludes by stating as the result of his investigations, that Professor Agassiz was right in referring the liasic fish to the Sturionidæ; that in some respects it evidenced a transitional form between the latter family and the more typical ganoids; that its food was similar to that of the existing members of the family, but that it was procured in a tranquil sea, rather than in the tumultuous waters frequented by sturgeons of the present time.

Seasonal changes in abundance and species composition of the yeast flora from organs of juvenile sturgeons were traced during their growing in the warm-water ponds of Luchegorsk Research Station of the Pacific Fish. Res. Centre (TINRO) in 2008-2009. The fungal community of the sturgeons was represented by whey, brewers, and wine yeasts, mostly with probiotic properties. Naganishia albida, Papiliotrema laurentii, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Trichomonascus ciferrii , and fungi of the genus Candida were found in the intestines and gills of kaluga and siberian sturgeon juveniles, but they came from the water and are usual for microflora of cages for fish cultivation. Cryptococcus neoformans and Ogataea angusta were found in the water only. Rhodotorula mucilaginosa , Cystobasidium minuta and fungi of the genus Hanseniaspora were associated with the sturgeon organs. Generally the yeast heterotrophic microbiota in the cages showed inhibitory effect against mould and enterobacteria. Colonization of the sturgeon mucous membranes by yeasts had seasonal dynamics that definitely affected on local immunity of the juveniles. Complete elimination of the yeasts from the sturgeon mucous membranes should be considered as a predictor of worsening of their physiological state and anti-epizootic measures are necessary in this case.
