Regularities of steel structure degradation of the “Novopskov-Aksay-Mozdok” gas main pipelines (Nevinnomysskaya CS) as well as the “Gorky-Center” pipelines (Gavrilovskaya CS) were studied. The revealed peculiarities of their degradation after long-term operation are suggested to be treated as a particular case of the damage accumulation classification (scheme) proposed by prof. H.M. Nykyforchyn. It is shown that the fracture surface consists of sections of ductile separation and localized zones of micro-spalling. The presence of the latter testifies to the hydrogen-induced embrittlement effect. However, the steels under investigation possess sufficiently high levels of the mechanical properties required for their further safe exploitation, both in terms of durability and cracking resistance.

Abstract The basic regularities in deformation and fracture of pipe steel X65 are revealed by testing specimens from the pipe fragment cut during the repair of the “Soyuz” gas main after 30 years of operation. It is shown that the pipe steel slightly changes its properties when the gas main is operated under the influence of working stresses and environmental factors. Structural degradation and micro-defects accumulated in the pipe wall were scattered, indicating that the material retains sufficient plasticity that allows it to resist fracture processes and the nucleation of macrocracks.

The article provides examples of critical damage to a long-running gas pipeline on the territory of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), which arose as a result of the development of corrosion processes, discusses the mechanisms and scenarios for the development of corrosion damage in the cryolithozone conditions. Considering the processes and mechanisms, they continue for a long period of time., an increase in the number of damages to a gas main pipeline due to corrosive degradation is expected in the near future. The stage of diffuse damage during long-term operation is confirmed by the increasing loss of working capacity due to corrosion damage in the last 25 years of the pipeline operation.
