Surface properties of nanoscale iron garnet films of different compositions prepared by reactive ion beam sputtering were examined by means of scanning probe microscopy. Atomic force microscope images of the film surfaces are represented for the films of different compositions and deposition times. The article presents the dependences of the roughness parameters on the film composition and thickness and on the energy of Ar+ ions by which the substrates were pre-treated. It was shown that the roughness parameters of the films' surface increase with the increase of Ar+ ions energy and the films' thickness.

The effect of elastic deformations on the ferromagnetic resonance spectrum of submicron polycrystalline films of yttrium iron garnet obtained by ion-beam sputtering on silicon and gallium arsenide substrates was studied. Magnetoelastic constants of the films on both substrates were calculated using the magnitude of the frequency shift of the absorption maximum in the ferromagnetic resonance spectrum. The value of constants did not exceed 16% of the known values for bulk polycrystalline garnet. The approach to increase the efficiency of electrical frequency tuning in composite multiferroic structures based on combination of static and dynamic (caused by the piezoelectric effect) deformations was proposed.

The effect of considerable enhancement of Faraday rotation (FR) and figure of merit (Q) in Bi, Gd, Al-substituted iron garnets plus Bi2O3 (Bi, Gd, Al: YIG / Bi2O3) nanocomposite films on Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrates was found. It reached threefold enhancement of the FR and twofold of the Q one. These films were produced by reactive ion beam sputtering of appropriate targets and following separate annealing. In addition it was determined that in double layer Bi-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi: YIG) nanostructures on GGG substrates the upper layer (0.5 – 3.0 nm) considerably affects the magneto-optical properties of the “thick” (8.0 – 10.0 nm) bottom layer. The possible reasons of these effects are discussed.
