BackgroundHealth-related quality of life (HRQOL) has become an important measure for evaluating patient treatment with non-curable chronic disease. The aim of the study was to assess HRQOL and its associated factors among patients with type II diabetes.MethodsThis is an institution-based, cross-sectional study conducted from March 13 to May 9, 2018. A total of 267 patients with type II diabetes who visited the clinic for follow-up for at least 3 months and who were 18 years or older were included in the study. The WHO Quality of Life-BREF was used to assess quality of life. Multivariable linear regression was employed to identify associated factors with HRQOL among patients with type II diabetes.ResultsThe mean score for overall HRQOL was 51.50±15.78. The mean scores for physical health, psychological, environmental and social relationship domains were 49.10±18.14, 53.51±19.82, 49.72±16.09 and 53.68±17.50, respectively. Age, disease duration and fasting blood glucose level were inversely associated with all domains of HRQOL (p<0.001). Body mass index was inversely related with all domains of HRQOL except with the physical health domain.ConclusionThe findings from this study indicated that all dimensions of HRQOL of patients with diabetes in this study setting were compromised. The study also identified important predictors such as age, duration of disease and level of fasting blood sugar. This entails the need to intervene in improving the HRQOL of patients with diabetes beyond the provision of standard treatments.

Introduction. Myocardial infarction is the most frequent manifestation of coronary heart disease and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The sudden and often profound physiological and psychological effect of the acute onset of myocardial infarction hurts the health-related quality of life. Objective. To assess health-related quality of life and associated factors among myocardial infarction patients at Cardiac Center, Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2020. Method. Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April 10 to June 25, 2020, at the Cardiac Center-Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The sample consisted of 421 myocardial infarction patients. Data were collected through an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire by using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire. Samples were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. The linear regression analysis model was fitted using SPSS 26 and STATA 14, and the unstandardized beta (𝛽) coefficient with a 95% confidence interval was used. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant for all analyses. Results. The mean score of the overall health-related quality of life was found to be 49.29 ± 14.83 , and the mean score for the physical domain was 47.96 ± 16.50 ; for the psychological domain, it was 50.91 ± 16.07 , and for environmental and social relationship domains, it was 48.30 ± 16.54 and 52.02 ± 24.61 , respectively. In the multiple regression analysis, increased age, living in a rural area, heart failure, and hypertension were inversely associated with overall health-related quality of life, while secondary and higher education were associated with better overall health-related quality of life. Conclusion. Patients with myocardial infarction at Cardiac Center, Ethiopia, had lower health-related quality of life. Hence, the finding of this study suggests the implementation of a cardiac rehabilitation program and comprehensive service given by healthcare providers.

Aims: This study evaluated the influence of diabetes on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores of adult patients with diabetes in northern Finland. Methods: A total of 3771 patients of the population of 10,264 patients aged ⩾15 years with the right for reimbursement of the cost of diabetes medication attended fundus photography screening for retinopathy in 2012. The 15D HRQoL scores and data on age, sex, type and duration of diabetes were gathered concurrently. The results were compared with the 15D scores reported in Finnish population studies. Results: The 15D score was obtained from 2461 patients aged 60±14 years; 20% had type 1 diabetes (T1D). The mean±SD 15D index was 0.930±0.079 in patients with T1D and their mean±SD age was 46±15 years. The mean±SD 15D index of the patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) was 0.890±0.100 and their mean±SD age was 63±11 years. The 15D index was no lower than in the Finnish general population in either patient group or in any age group. However, the 15D score was negatively influenced by an increasing duration of diabetes in both patients with T1D and patients with T2D. No sex difference was found. Conclusions: The mean HRQoL score of patients with diabetes in this study is comparable with that of the general population of equal age. Neither the type of diabetes nor sex independently affected the HRQoL score, but a longer duration of diabetes seemed to impair the HRQoL score. Current diabetes care appears to maintain a normal HRQoL score in this diabetic population in Finland.

ABSTRACT Objective To assess the oral impact on daily performances (OIDP) and to study the inter-relationship between OIDP, dental attendance, socioeconomic status and caries experience among children enrolled in the National Cadets Corps (NCC). Materials and methods A cross-sectional survey of 389 male NCC cadets in the age group of 13 to 15 years was done. Child version of Oral Impacts on Daily Performances questionnaire (Child-OIDP) was used to assess the quality of life. Information on demographic correlates and oral health behavior was obtained through self-administered questionnaire. The cadets were clinically examined for caries using decayed, missing and filled tooth index (DMFT). Results A total of 359 children completed all the stages of the survey. The mean age of children was 13.96 ± 0.6 years. Fiftyfive percent of the participants experienced at least one impact in the last 3 months. The mean OIDP score for the population was 12.13 ± 5.85. The most prevalent impact was ‘difficulty in eating’ (37%) and the least affected daily performance was social contact (17%). Dental attendance and caries experience showed significant positive correlation with all the impacts and the overall OIDP score. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed significant influence of dental attendance and caries experience on OIDP. Conclusion The study revealed that oral health has significant impact on quality of life of Indian children. How to cite this article Pentapati KC, Acharya S, Bhat M, Rao SVK, Singh S.
