A New Species

The perfect state of Chondropodium pseudotsugae White is shown to be a new species of Durandiella, for which the name D. pseudotsugae is proposed. Maximum growth in culture is obtained on corn meal agar at 15 °C. Apothecia are produced in the spring; the ascospores are forcibly discharged; pycnidia persist throughout the summer and discharge spores only when moistened. The host response of Douglas fir is the production of a "button" of persistent secondary periderm beneath the infected area.

The perfect state of Dothistroma pini Hulbary was found on native and exotic pines in British Columbia. It is described as a new species of Scirrhia Fuckel, and the name S. pini is proposed. The life history, cultural characteristics, and distribution are presented.

A new species of Dermea is described. The fungus was associated with extensive damage to young Douglas fir (P seudotsuga menziesii) following severe early frosts in the Cariboo Region of British Columbia. Inoculation tests proved the fungus was capable of invading bark wounds and causing necrosis. Life history and cultural characteristics of the fungus are presented. The development of the disease is described and discussed.

Material collected in Loch Tannoch was allowed to macerate in a chemical nutrient. A rich crop of Euglena gracilis as well as other infusoria resulted. Eight months later, when the Euglena had encysted, many amoebae were found at the bottom of the receptacle. They constitute a new species, here named Amoeba hugonis. An average adult specimen, when extended, measures about 104x52·2µ. The nucleus consists of a central karyosome lying in the nuclear sap, separated from the cytoplasm by a wellmarked nuclear membrane. Between the latter and the karyosome is situated an achromatic ‘collar’ with chromatin particles embedded in it. Fission is described, but a study of mitosis has been deferred. The life-history of this small amoeba is very similar to that of the large A. proteus, &c. The cycle occupies two months. Chromidia begin to appear in the cytoplasm of the early adult. They give rise to spores, out of which amoebulae hatch.

AbstractHypatima mangiferae Sattler sp. n. is described from Kenya, where its larva is injurious to commercial mango trees. A description of its life-history, based on extensive field observations and laboratory studies, is also provided. The moth, its male and female genitalia and the damage caused by the larva are illustrated.

A New Species

AbstractA new species of Pseudis is described from São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is known from the southern parts of the Serra Geral where it occurs in grassland, inhabiting permanent ponds and still-water zones of slow flowing creeks. It is characterized by a paired vocal sac and a bulbous thumb, considerably widened at the base. It is distinguished from P. minutus by its different call, body coloration, rounded snout, and a more robust body with shorter hindlimbs. Advertisement call, tadpole, and life history are described. The taxonomy of the family Pseudidae in Rio Grande do Sul is discussed, supporting the synonymy of Lysapsus mantidactylus and P. meridionalis with P. minutus.

A New Species

A half a century ago, R. T. Leiper described a new species belonging to the genus Fasciola from specimens which he collected from hippopotami at the Murchison Falls, on the Victoria Nile in Uganda, in the summer of 1907. This species, Fasciola nyanzae, was found in the bile ducts of the liver, and in most instances the specimens were somewhat macerated owing to the length of time that had elapsed before the animal could be recovered from the water. Nevertheless, the characteristic shape of these liver flukes and the restriction of the branched testes to the anterior third of the body made it possible to recognise them as being different from all other species of the genus known at that time.

A new species of Stenomicra is described for the Neotropical Region, from phytotelmata of Araceae at an urban forest fragment in the city of Manaus, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Morphological descriptions of the immatures and the adults (male and female) are provided, together with biological information on the life cycle of the species and its “host” plant.

During a visit to Professor Fernald, in Amherst, Mass., last spring, he showed me a Nepticula, bred from Apple, which he had described in manuscript as a new species, but which he afterwards had suspected to be Micropteryx pomivorella, Packard.From reading the description and life-history of packard's species, I felt sure that it was a Nepticula and presumably the same as Professor Fernald's species, and a week after, while studying the collection in the Agassiz Museum, Cambridge, I obtained definite proof that we were right.

All the Mesostigmatic mites which have been found as ecto- or endoparasites of snakes are listed and it is suggested that the latter are probably derived from the former. The homologies of the dorsal shields are established and a progressive fusion is shown to have taken place. On this evidence a new genus is erected for O. bedfordi (Radford) to include most probably the lung mites of African snakes. The life history and general biology are discussed. It is shown that there is no experimental evidence that these acari are vectors of disease or that they induce any change in the tissues of the host. Evidence is brought forward to show that the parasites of the more nearly related snake hosts are themselves more nearly related: some consequences of this are discussed. A key to the females of all the known lung mites of snakes is given together with the diagnosis of the new genus Hammertonia and of a new species, Ophiopneumicola americana. The view that the genus Ophiopneumicola is not a natural group is expressed. O. hammertoni Radford is redescribed and some points of significance discussed. The species incertae sedis of Keegan (1943) are discussed.
