The emission spectrum of ArH contains a band near 10 110 cm–1 that appears to be the analogue of the 3dσ – 4p, v = 0 – 0, band of ArD, observed and analysed near 10 230 cm–1. However, previous attempts to assign the rotational structure of this band of ArH were unsuccessful. Here we observe and analyse the 4f – 3dσ band of ArH near 4400 cm–1, and are then able to calculate the rotational structure of the 3dσ – 4p transition entirely from known data. The observed band is similar but not identical to the calculated band. We speculate that the observed spectrum is a v – v sequence band of 3dσ – 4p, where the v [Formula: see text] 0 upper state is populated through some mechanism peculiar to this isotopomer. Four new bands in the red region are observed which have been described in terms of A2Σ+–B2Σ+ and F2Σ+–B2Σ+ systems. A rotational analysis together with deperturbation calculation of one band at 6763 Å has shown that A2Σ+ (ν = 7) and F2Σ+ (ν = 0) vibrational levels are involved in a homogeneous perturbation. The rotational structure study of three bands of a new transition I2Σ+–A2Σ+ has been carried out. From the study of heterogeneous perturbations observed in the I vibrational levels, it has been suggested that the perturbing state is a 2Π state arising from the 3d complex.

Observation by the author (Durie 1951) of a well-developed band system in the emission from an iodine–fluorine flame provided the first evidence for the existence of iodine monofluoride (IF), the last of the six possible diatomic inter-halogen compounds to be detected. The spectrum, which lies in the region 4 300 to 7 600 Å, has since been photographed under high resolution using a 21-ft concave grating spectrograph. The rotational structure of the bands is shown to be consistent with an A3Π0+ → X1Σ transition in the IF molecule. A rotational and vibrational analysis of the bands has been carried out and the molecular constants evaluated for IF. The results are as follows:[Formula: see text]The present evidence relating to the value of the dissociation energy of IF is discussed.

The emission spectrum of Si130Te was excited by microwave discharge (2450 MHz) in a sealed quartz tube. The A1Π–X1Σ+ band system (3100–3900 Å) (1 Å = 10−10 m) photographed under high resolution on a 10.6 m Ebert grating spectrograph. The rotational analysis of 32 bands was carried out, which led to the determination of the accurate vibrational and rotational constants. The rotational structure belonging to ν′ > 9 levels appear to be perturbed.

The focus of discussion in Working Group 3 was on the Thermodynamic Properties as determined spectroscopically, including the observational techniques and the theoretical modeling of physical processes responsible for the emission spectrum. Recent advances in observational techniques and theoretical concepts make this discussion particularly timely. It is wise to remember that the determination of thermodynamic parameters is not an end in itself and that these are interesting chiefly for what they can tell us about the energetics and mass transport in prominences.
