Zero field level crossing effects have been observed in the lines emitted from the J = 1, 2, and 3 rotational levels of the [Formula: see text] state of molecular hydrogen excited in an r.f. discharge. The polarization of the R(0), R(1), and R(2) lines of the 3d1Σ → 2p1Σ(0 → 0) band as a function of magnetic field was observed to be Lorentzian, and using the Landé g factors measured by Dieke et al. yields radiative lifetimes of 2.66 × 10−8 s, 3.83 × 10−8 s, and 3.93 × 10−8 s for J = 1,2, and 3 respectively. The half-width of the level crossing curves was observed to vary linearly with pressure in the range 15 m Torr to 90 m Torr and yield collision cross sections of [Formula: see text] for all three states. The source of the discrepancy between the first and the latter two lifetimes is discussed. The lifetime of the J = 21, 3d1Π state has also been measured with less precision and yields 3.84 × 10−8 s.

Zero-field level-crossing techniques have been used to measure some upper-state lifetimes of the helium atom. The half-widths of curves obtained by plotting the polarization against the magnetic field strength for the n1D–21D transitions yielded lifetimes of 2.03 × 10−8 s for the 31D state, 3.36 × 10−8 s for the 41D state, and 7.44 × 10−8 s for the 51D state. Collision cross sections for these 1D levels were also determined.

Magnetic field level crossing has been studied for the excited states of 80Se2 produced by absorption of the 4880, 4765, and 4727 Å lines of an argon laser. The product of the radiative lifetime and the Lande g factor, gτ, together with the sign of the g factor, has been determined for each of the levels. An identification of the previously unobserved transition produced by 4727 Å excitation is presented.

Observing the change of the Hanle effect under the influence of a homogeneous electric field E the Stark effect of the (5p1/25d5/2)j=2-state in Sn I was studied. Due to the tensorial part β Jz2E2 in the Hamiltonian of the second order Stark effect the signal of the zero field crossing (M ∓ 2, M′ = 0 β ≷ 0 ) is shifted to the magnetic field H with gJμBH=2 | β | E2. From these shifts for different electric field strengths the value of the Stark parameter|β| = 0.21(2) MHz/(kV/cm)2 · gJ/1.13was deduced. A theoretical value of ß using Coulomb wave functions is discussed.
