A microscopic treatment of weak processes like the β-decay of 14C (ground state) or 14O (ground state) and the partial muon capture by 14N (ground state) to 14C (ground state) is presented in order to detect the possible importance of the mesonic exchange currents in these unusually inhibited processes. The study shows that this possibility could occur in the muon capture process associated with the total spin [Formula: see text] hyperfine state.

The β-decay rates of 60Ca have been studied within a microscopic model, which is based on the Skyrme interaction T45 to construct single-particle and phonon spaces. We observe a redistribution of the Gamow–Teller strength due to the phonon-phonon coupling, considered in the model. For 60Sc, the spin-parity of the ground state is found to be 1+. We predict that the half-life of 60Ca is 0.3 ms, while the total probability of the βxn emission is 6:1%. Additionally, the random matrix theory has been applied to analyze the statistical properties of the 1+ spectrum populated in the β-decay to elucidate the obtained results.

To understand sulfide inclusions in the steel industry, the structures, stabilities, electronic and magnetic properties of the Mn[Formula: see text]S and Mn[Formula: see text]S2 (n=1–6) clusters are investigated by using first-principles. The results show that the S atoms prefer to occupy the outside surface center of the Mn[Formula: see text] (n = 3–6) clusters. Chiral isomers are occurred to the Mn5S2 isomers. The Mn2S, Mn2S2 clusters are more stable than their neighbors. However, the MnS, S2, and Mn5I2 clusters possess higher dynamic stability than their neighbors by the HOMO–LUMO gaps. The Mn[Formula: see text]S and Mn[Formula: see text]S2 (n = 1–6) clusters prefer to spontaneous generation by Gibbs free energy. A few 4s orbital electrons of Mn atoms transferred to the S atoms by Mülliken population analysis. For the other Mn[Formula: see text]S (n = 1–6) clusters, the spin density (17.256) of the ground-state Mn6S clusters is the largest. For the Mn[Formula: see text]S2 (n = 1–6) clusters, the total spin (9.604) of the ground-state Mn2S2 cluster is the largest.

The total rate of muon capture by 16O is calculated using the linked cluster expansion to introduce ground state correlations. All diagrams up to the second order in the number of hole-lines are included. [Formula: see text] is reduced by some 15% and is shown to behave like σ−1,. [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are strongly increased by about 30%. This enhancement is related to that part of the defect wave function which arises directly from the tensor component of the N–N potential. It is suggested that, for those transitions that are induced by spin operators, the mean neutrino energy may be smaller than usually thought.

The low-lying level structure of 31 Mg has been investigated by the theoretical framework of deformed-basis antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (DAMD) plus generator coordinate method (GCM) with the Gogny D1S force. It is shown that the N =20 magic number is broken and the intruder configuration (neutron 2p3h configuration) dominates the ground state. The observed data such as the magnetic moment and β decay strength are well reproduced.
