New Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta) from the east coast of Vancouver Island

The following new species of littoral enchytraeid are described from the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia—Enchytraeus cryptosetosus, Lumbricillus mirabilis, L. vancouverensis, L. georgiensis, L. qualicumensis, L. belli. These descriptions bring the number of North American Enchytraeus spp. to 6 and that of Lumbricillus spp. to 13. Existing evidence suggests that the enchytraeid fauna of the Pacific slope is quite distinct from that of the rest of North America and may have closer affinities with that of the northwest Pacific.

A new species Bradyidius saanichi from Saanich Inlet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, is described and illustrated in detail. This species is closely related to B. pacificus (Brodsky, 1950) among the six previously known species in the genus, but can be readily distinguished from the latter by the strongly divergent rostral rami in addition to some other differences.

A new species, Pholis clemensi, referred to the family Pholidae, is named and described from 12 specimens taken in southern British Columbia waters and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Pholis clemensi is compared with other members of the genus, and a key is given to the North American species.

A new species of Porifera, Mycale banfieldense (Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida), is described from a semiobscure, intertidal cavern of the outer coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. This is the first species of Mycale from the Pacific basin known to possess micracanthoxea microscleres, and only the second such species worldwide. These microscleres, which average 4.2 × 0.2 μm, are the smallest sponge spicules discovered to date. They are formed individually within cytoplasmic vacuoles of anucleolate scleroblasts but each scleroblast contains 20 to 50 similar spicules.

A new deep-sea chiton of the genus Placiphorella Dall, 1879, Placiporella laurae n. sp. is described from the Pacific coast of North America. It is compared with its congener Placiphorella pacifica Berry, 1919, from which it differs primarily by having granular valves, lacking false beaks, a papillose girdle, and the characteristics of its girdle spicules

The geometrid moth Hemithea aestivaria (Hübner, 1789) was introduced from Europe to North America, first detected in British Columbia in 1973. Until 2019, its North American range was limited to a restricted area of the Pacific Northwest. Here, we report on the first records of H. aestivaria for eastern North America from three widely separated urban centers in eastern Canada during 2019-2020.

Four new venerid species from the Cretaceous of the North American Pacific Slope are described and four previously described species are reassigned. Of the new species, two are allotted to new genera: Rhaiphiale based upon Rhaiphiale pharota n. sp. and Egrona based upon Egrona fallax n. sp., both Turonian in age and from southern California. The other new species are Loxo quintense n. sp., of late Maastrichtian age from California, and Paraesa cedrina n. sp., late Albian in age from Baja California, Mexico. The previously described species “Meretrix” arata Gabb, 1864, Turonian, and “?Meretrix” fragilis Gabb, 1869, late Maastrichtian, are placed in the new genus Callistalox; “Meretrix” lens (Gabb, 1864), Campanian age, and Flaventia zeta Popenoe, 1937, Turonian, are provisionally assigned to Paraesa Casey, 1952. This is the first identification of Paraesa from the Pacific Slope of North America. No species of Flaventia Jukes-Brown, 1908, is now known in Pacific Slope faunas.

Two new species of the hexactinellid family Tretodictyidae, both collected by submersible, have been discovered off the coasts of North America. The Pacific species, Tretodictyum montereyensis n. sp., has an unusual skeleton with a fused cortex added over the usual tretodictyid system of ridges and grooves on the dermal surface. The Atlantic species, Hexactinella carolinensis n. sp., is unusual among its congeners in having swollen nodes on the dermal skeleton. Diagnoses of both genera have been modified to accommodate the new findings. The fine diactins of both species are found to have shallow brackets and short barbs, confirming their uncinate nature. Addition of these two species raises the number of known North American tretodictyids from one to three.

The following native earthworms from the spruce-hemlock forest region of western North America are described: Lumbricidae: Bimastos lawrenceae Fender, n.sp. from Vancouver Island; Megascolecidae: five new species of Arctiostrotus McKey-Fender, 1982, including A. vancouverensis McKey-Fender, n.sp. from Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula, A. pluvialis McKey-Fender, n.sp. and A. adunatus McKey-Fender, n.sp. from the Olympic Peninsula, A. fontinalis McKey-Fender, n.sp. from northwestern Oregon and western Washington, and A. johnsoni McKey-Fender, n.sp. from western Washington. The known species A. perrieri (Benham, 1892) and A. altmani (Gates, 1942) are redescribed, as is the Vancouver Island population of Toutellus oregonensis (Smith, 1937). Ecology, biology, and references to some associated biota and a key are included.
