An assessment of the phylogeny of the Branchiobdellida (Annelida: Clitellata), using PAUP

Analyses using PAUP (phylogenetic analysis using parsimony) were conducted on a matrix of 24 taxa and 26 characters. The taxa included generalised descriptions of a haplotaxid and a lumbriculid oligochaete as outgroups with a hypothetical branchiobdellidan ancestor and 21 genera as ingroups. The branchiobdellidan taxon is a monophyly, and using anatomical characters only, is composed of three suprageneric assemblages. The taxonomic rank of the taxon and assemblages cannot be determined until they have been compared with cladistic analyses on other closely related clitellate groups. In the meantime the currently accepted ordinal rank of Branchiobdellida and the major branchiobdellidan families should continue to be used, with the latter reflecting the assemblages of the genera in our analyses: Branchiobdellidae (including Holtodrilus n.gen., Sinodrilus n.gen., and Xironodrilus), Bdellodrilidae (including Caridinophila and Hidejiodrilus n.gen.), and Cambarincolidae. An analysis with two zoogeographical characters in the matrix caused the genera to be divided into their respective North American and Eurasian groups; however, the North American Triannulata appeared constantly in the latter group. The genera in the Branchiobdellidae, as defined by us, are found in both geographical regions, and predictably the assemblage was split in two.

The Nearctic leafhopper species Gyponana (Gyponana) mali DeLong, 1942 is reported from Europe for the fi rst time and represents the fi rst record of the tribe Gyponini Stål, 1870 (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Iassinae: Gyponini) for the Palearctic Region. Specimens were collected in southern Switzerland (Ticino) and two regions of northern Italy (Lombardy and Veneto) in 2015–2019. The preferred host plant in these areas appears to be Cornus sanguinea L. Phylogenetic analysis of the COI barcode sequences grouped one of the European specimens with three individuals of G. (G.) mali from Ontario, Canada. Morphological study indicated that the male genitalia of the European population are intermediate between G. (G.) mali and G. (G.) extenda DeLong, 1942.

Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning data have been analyzed for the years 2001–09 for North America, which includes Alaska, Canada, and the lower 48 U.S. states. Flashes recorded within the North American Lightning Detection Network (NALDN) are examined. No corrections for detection efficiency variability are made over the 9 yr of the dataset or over the large geographical area comprising North America. There were network changes in the NALDN during the 9 yr, but these changes have not been corrected for nor have the recorded data been altered in any way with the exception that all positive lightning reports with peak currents less than 15 kA have been deleted. Thus, the reader should be aware that secular changes are not just climatological in nature. All data were analyzed with a spatial resolution of 20 km. The analyses presented in this work provide a synoptic view of the interannual variability of lightning observations in North America, including the impacts of physical changes in the network during the 9 yr of study. These data complement and extend previous analyses that evaluate the U.S. NLDN during periods of upgrade. The total (negative and positive) flashes for ground flash density, the percentage of positive lightning, and the positive flash density have been analyzed. Furthermore, the negative and positive first stroke peak currents and the flash multiplicity have been examined. The highest flash densities in Canada are along the U.S.–Canadian border (1–2 flashes per square kilometer) and in the United States along the Gulf of Mexico coast from Texas through Florida (exceeding 14 flashes per square kilometer in Florida). The Gulf Stream is “outlined” by higher flash densities off the east coast of the United States. Maximum annual positive flash densities in Canada range primarily from 0.01 to 0.3 flashes per square kilometer, and in the United States to over 0.5 flashes per square kilometer in the Midwest and in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi. The annual percentage of positive lightning to ground varies from less than 2% over Florida to values exceeding 25% off the West Coast, Alaska, and the Yukon. A localized maximum in the percentage of positive lightning in the NALDN occurs in Manitoba and western Ontario, just north of North Dakota and Minnesota. When averaged over North America, first stroke negative median peak currents range from 19.8 kA in 2001 to 16.0 kA in 2009 and for all years, average 16.1 kA. First stroke positive median peak currents range from a high of 29.0 kA in 2008 and 2009 to a low of 23.3 kA in 2003 with a median of 25.7 kA for all years. There is a relatively sharp transition from low to high median negative peak currents along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States. No sharp transitions are observed for the median positive peak currents. Relatively lower positive peak currents occur throughout the southeastern United States. The highest values of mean negative multiplicity exceed 3.0 strokes per flash in the NALDN with some variation over the 9 yr. Lower values of mean negative multiplicity occur in the western United States. Positive flash mean multiplicity is slightly higher than 1.1, with the highest values of 1.7 observed in the southwestern states. As has been noted in prior research, CG lightning has significant variations from storm to storm as well as between geographical regions and/or seasons and, consequently, a single distribution for any lightning parameter, such as multiplicity or peak current, may not be sufficient to represent or describe the parameter.

The Nimravidae is a family of extinct carnivores commonly referred to as “false saber-tooth cats.” Since their initial discovery, they have prompted difficulty in taxonomic assignments and number of valid species. Past revisions have only examined a handful of genera, while recent advances in cladistic and morphometric analyses have granted us additional avenues to answering questions regarding our understanding of valid nimravid taxa and their phylogenetic relationships. To resolve issues of specific validity, the phylogenetic species concept (PSC) was utilized to maintain consistency in diagnosing valid species, while simultaneously employing character and linear morphometric analyses for confirming the validity of taxa. Determined valid species and taxonomically informative characters were then employed in two differential cladistic analyses to create competing hypotheses of interspecific relationships. The results suggest the validity of twelve species and six monophyletic genera. The first in depth reviews ofPogonodonandDinictisreturned two valid species (P. platycopis,P. davisi) for the former, while only one for the latter (D. felina). The taxonomic validity ofNanosmilusis upheld. Two main clades with substantial support were returned for all cladistic analyses, the Hoplophoneini and Nimravini, with ambiguous positions relative to these main clades for the European taxa:Eofelis,Dinailurictis bonali, andQuercylurus major; and the North American taxaDinictisandPogonodon.Eusmilusis determined to represent a non-valid genus for North American taxa, suggesting non-validity for Old World nimravid species as well. Finally,Hoplophoneus mentalisis found to be a junior synonym ofHoplophoneus primaevus, while the validity ofHoplophoneus oharraiis reinstated.

Leucoagaricus idae-fragum, a nice and very rare pink-lilac lepiotoid species originally described from France, was put into synonymy with the North American taxon Lepiota decorata by Vellinga (2006), only on a morphological basis. In this paper, the independent position of L. idae-fragum from L. decorata is pointed out, based upon the phylogenetic analysis of the nrITS sequences obtained from recently collected specimens of L. idae-fragum from three Italian areas, and from the holotype collection. Morphological investigations of all these collections revealed high variability in shape of the cheilocystidia, spores, inconstant ammonia reaction, characters which have always been considered to be quite stable within a single species and traditionally used for discriminating among species in Leucoagaricus. Full descriptions, with illustrations of fresh basidiomes and of the main macro- and micromorphological features are provided together with a comparison with allied species.

Abstract Alligatoroidea is the most species-rich crocodylomorph clade of the Cenozoic of South America, with nearly all species belonging to the Caimaninae clade. However, the earliest records of Caimaninae in South America, which are from the Palaeocene, are based mostly on incomplete specimens, which increases the importance of detailed taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on these taxa. This paper offers a taxonomic and phylogenetic review of Necrosuchus ionensis, a caimanine species from the Salamanca Formation of the Palaeocene of Argentina. Necrosuchus ionensis is considered a valid species, albeit with a different diagnosis from that proposed by previous authors. The phylogenetic analysis shows, for the first time, that N. ionensis belongs to the derived Caimaninae clade Jacarea. However, a better understanding of the Jacarea clade is needed, and alternative placements for N. ionensis might be considered. Nevertheless, the placement of N. ionensis as a derived caimanine raises interesting perspectives on the early evolution and radiation of caimanines, which are thoroughly discussed in this paper together with other results obtained in this study, such as the recovery of the North American caimanines Bottosaurus and Tsoabichi as a clade.
