Abstract We present an overview of processes induced by the coherent Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) photon cloud in heavy ion collisions. Due to the rather broad energy spectrum of photons a large variety of physics topics can be addressed. At the low-energy side, there are the electromagnetic dissociation processes. We discuss the few-neutron production via giant dipole resonance excitation. A typical high energy photonuclear process that has attracted much attention is the diffractive photoproduction of vector mesons. We review the color dipole approach to coherent and incoherent diffractive photoproduction of $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ mesons. Finally we turn to peripheral and semicentral collisions and discuss the role of WW photons in the production of very low-$$P_T$$ P T dileptons.

AbstractThe progress over the 30 years since the first high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the BNL-AGS and CERN-SPS has been truly remarkable. Rigorous experimental and theoretical studies have revealed a new state of the matter in heavy-ion collisions, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Many signatures supporting the formation of the QGP have been reported. Among them are jet quenching, the non-viscous flow, direct photons, and Debye screening effects. In this article, selected signatures of the QGP observed at RHIC and the LHC are reviewed.

We briefly review some selected topics in the small x physics. In particular, we discuss the progress in the problem related to the resummation at small x and the parton saturation phenomena. Finally we discuss some phenomenological applications to deep inelastic scattering, hadron and heavy ion collisions.
