Delayed Cutaneous Hypersensitivity Reactions in Qigong (Chun Do Sun Bup) Trainees by Multitest Cell Mediated Immunity

To determine the difference of cellular immunity between a Qigong trainee group and a normal healthy group, skin tests for delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity (DCH) were carried out with ubiquitous seven antigens. The maximal antigen response time was faster in Qigong trainee group (24 hr) and the response antigen number was also higher in the Qigong trainee group (6 antigens) than in normal healthy person (48 hr and 4 antigens). Qigong trainee also had a larger induration diameter (5.14 mm) than normal healthy person (3.79 mm) at 24 hr. Our results represent the difference in cell mediated immunity (CMI) between Qigong trainees and normal healthy subjects.

Abstract Hirudin is one of the new synthetic antithrombin agents, which is most commonly used in patients with type II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and in patients with hypersensitivity reactions to unfractionated heparin as well as low-molecular-weight heparins. Hirudin is comparable to heparin as an antithrombotic agent and also has been studied as a primary treatment in patients who experienced acute myocardial infarctions. We describe a patient with a history of type II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia who was placed on intravenous hirudin therapy. After extravasation of the intravenous hirudin site, the patient developed a delayed hypersensitivity reaction that histologically showed an epithelioid granulomatous infiltrate. Although rare reports of hypersensitivity reactions to hirudin have been published, these reactions have not been well characterized and the histopathologic changes have not been described.

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, and objective biomarkers are required for future computer-aided diagnosis. This study aims to assess the variation of frontal alpha complexity among different severity depression patients and healthy subjects, therefore to explore the depressed neuronal activity and to suggest valid biomarkers. 69 depression patients (divided into three groups according to the disease severity) and 14 healthy subjects were employed to collect 3-channel resting Electroencephalogram signals. Sample entropy and Lempel–Ziv complexity methods were employed to evaluate the Electroencephalogram complexity among different severity depression groups and healthy group. Kruskal–Wallis rank test and group t-test were performed to test the difference significance among four groups and between each two groups separately. All indexes values show that depression patients have significantly increased complexity compared to healthy subjects, and furthermore, the complexity keeps increasing as the depression deepens. Sample entropy measures exhibit superiority in distinguishing mild depression from healthy group with significant difference even between nondepressive state group and healthy group. The results confirm the altered neuronal activity influenced by depression severity and suggest sample entropy and Lempel–Ziv complexity as promising biomarkers in future depression evaluation and diagnosis.

Abstract Background Immediate hypersensitivity reactions occurring during anesthesia are classified as allergic when skin tests and mast cell tryptase are positive and as nonallergic when negative results are obtained. Cysteinyl leukotrienes (cysLTs) are potent mediators synthesized by mast cell and eosinophil that induce bronchial constriction. They could play a role in hypersensitivity reactions. Methods cysLT C4, D4, and E4 concentrations were measured by a competition immunoassay in serial plasma samples obtained prospectively from 21 anesthetized controls and retrospectively from 34 patients who reacted at induction of anesthesia (24 with allergic and 10 with nonallergic reactions). Results In controls, the median (interquartile range) cysLT concentration was 0.83 (0.69 to 1.02) μg/l before anesthesia and was unchanged 30 min, 6 h, and 24 h afterward. In the patients with allergic reactions, the values were highly increased 30 to 60 min after the reaction (17.9 [7.8 to 36.0] μg/l), while the patients with nonallergic reactions had less increased values (7.3 [3.0 to 11.5] μg/l). The difference between the three groups was significant (P < 0.0001). Increased values persisted during the 24 h of observation. Concentrations were significantly higher in patients with bronchospasm (P = 0.016). Conclusions cysLTs appear to be an important mediator of allergic and nonallergic immediate hypersensitivity reactions. These findings might open a new field for management of patients with hypersensitivity reactions, especially nonallergic ones.

The delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was tested in 84 patients with different diseases including large bowel adenocarcinoma and breast carcinoma, with or without metastasis, liver cirrhosis and inflammatory or degenerative diseases. Positive skin test to CEA was observed in a small proportion (11 %) of the patients tested. No difference in positive skin test reactions was observed in the 6 different groups of patients. Similar delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions were found to various amount of CEA ranging from 0.5 to 25 μg. No correlation was seen between the results of skin test and blood CEA levels.

Sixteen patients who fit the diagnostic criteria of endocardial fibroelastosis were investigated by means of mumps skin tests and serum assays of mumps hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies. No relationship was found between the clinical entity, endocardial fibroelastosis, and either mumps-specific antibodies or delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity to the mumps virus.
