The extension of the statistical parton distributions to include their transverse momentum dependence (TMD) is revisited by considering that the proton target has a finite longitudinal momentum. The TMD will be generated by means of a transverse energy sum rule. The new results are mainly relevant for electron–proton inelastic collisions in the low Q2 region. We take into account the effects of the Melosh–Wigner rotation for the helicity distributions.

Using recently published HERMES data on multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, we discuss the flavor dependence of unpolarized transverse-momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions. We find convincing indications that favored fragmentation into pions have smaller average transverse momentum than unfavored ones and fragmentation into kaons. We find weaker indications of flavor dependence in the transverse-momentum dependence of parton distributions.

AbstractGeneralized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs), as mother funtions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs), encode the most general parton structure of hadrons. We calculate four twist-two time reversal odd GTMDs of pion in a scalar spectator model. We study the dependence of GTMDs on the longitudinal momentum fraction x carried by the active quark and the transverse momentum $$|\vec k_T|$$ | k → T | for different values of skewness $$\xi $$ ξ defined as the longitudinal momentum transferred to the pion as well as the total momentum $$|\vec \Delta _T|$$ | Δ → T | transferred to the pion. In addition, the quasi-TMDs and quasi-GPDs of pion have also been investigated in this paper.

The present knowledge about nontrivial relations between generalized parton distributions for a spin-1/2 hadron on the one hand and transverse momentum dependent distributions on the other is reviewed. While various relations can be found in the framework of simple spectator models, so far no model-independent nontrivial relations have been established. In fact, by relating the two types of parton distributions to the fully unintegrated, off-diagonal quark-quark correlator for a spin-1/2 hadron, we argue that none of the nontrivial relations can be promoted to a model-independent status.

The study of Drell–Yan (DY) processes involving the collision of an (un)polarised hadron beam on an (un)polarised proton target can result in a fundamental improvement of our knowledge on the transverse momentum dependent (TMDs) parton distribution functions (PDFs) of hadrons. The production mechanism of J/ψ and J/ψ - DY duality can also be addressed. One of the forthcoming polarised DY experiments (COMPASS (SPS, CERN)) is discussed in this context. The most important features of this project are briefly reviewed, as well as its sensitivity to the various transverse momentum dependent spin asymmetries.

The quark spin densities related to generalized parton distributions in impact-parameter space and to transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions are reviewed within a light-cone quark model, with focus on the role of the different spin-spin and spin-orbit correlations of quarks. Results for azimuthal spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering due to T -even transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions are also discussed.
