We review some of the fundamental notions associated with the theory of solitons. More precisely, we focus on the issue of conservation laws via the existence of the Lax pair and also on methods that provide solutions to partial or ordinary differential equations that are associated to discrete or continuous integrable systems. The Riccati equation associated to a given continuous integrable system is also solved and hence suitable conserved quantities are derived. The notion of the Darboux–Bäcklund transformation is introduced and employed in order to obtain soliton solutions for specific examples of integrable equations. The Zakharov–Shabat dressing scheme and the Gelfand–Levitan–Marchenko equation are also introduced. Via this method, generic solutions are produced and integrable hierarchies are explicitly derived. Various discrete and continuous integrable models are employed as examples such as the Toda chain, the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model, the Korteweg–de Vries and nonlinear Schrödinger equations as well as the sine-Gordon and Liouville models.

AbstractUnder investigation in this article is a generalised nonlinear Schrödinger-Maxwell-Bloch system for the picosecond optical pulse propagation in an inhomogeneous erbium-doped silica optical fibre. Lax pair, conservation laws, Darboux transformation, and generalised Darboux transformation for the system are constructed; with the one- and two-soliton solutions, the first- and second-order rogue waves given. Soliton propagation is discussed. Nonlinear tunneling effect on the solitons and rogue waves are investigated. We find that (i) the detuning of the atomic transition frequency from the optical pulse frequency affects the velocity of the pulse when the detuning is small, (ii) nonlinear tunneling effect does not affect the energy redistribution of the soliton interaction, (iii) dispersion barrier/well has an effect on the soliton velocity, whereas nonlinear well/barrier does not, (iv) nonlinear well/barrier could amplify/compress the solitons or rogue waves in a smoother manner than the dispersion barrier/well, and (v) dispersion barrier could “attract” the nearby rogue waves, whereas the dispersion well has a repulsive effect on them.

Under investigation in this paper is a generalized (2+1)-dimensional variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation in an inhomogeneous Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain. Lax pair and infinitely-many conservation laws are derived, indicating the existence of the multi-soliton solutions for such an equation. Via the Hirota method with an auxiliary function, bilinear forms, dark one-, two- and three-soliton solutions are derived. Propagation and interactions for the dark solitons are illustrated graphically: Velocity of the solitons is linearly related to the coefficients of the second- and fourth-order dispersion terms, while amplitude of the solitons does not depend on them. Interactions between the two solitons are shown to be elastic, while those among the three solitons are pairwise elastic.

In this paper, the soliton solutions and the corresponding conservation laws of a few nonlinear wave equations will be obtained. The Hunter-Saxton equation, the improved Korteweg-de Vries equation, and other such equations will be considered. The Lie symmetry approach will be utilized to extract the conserved densities of these equations. The soliton solutions will be used to obtain the conserved quantities of these equations.

Taking a loop algebra [Formula: see text] we obtain an integrable soliton hierarchy which is similar to the well-known Kaup–Newell (KN) hierarchy, but it is not. We call it a modified KN (mKN) hierarchy. Then two new enlarged loop algebras of the loop algebra [Formula: see text] are established, respectively, which are used to establish isospectral problems. Thus, two various types of integrable soliton-equation hierarchies along with multi-component potential functions are obtained. Their Hamiltonian structures are also obtained by the variational identity. The second hierarchy is integrable couplings of the mKN hierarchy. This paper provides a clue for generating loop algebras, specially, gives an approach for producing new integrable systems. If we obtain a new soliton hierarchy, we could deduce its symmetries, conserved laws, Darboux transformations, soliton solutions and so on. Hence, the way presented in the paper is an important aspect to obtain new integrable systems in soliton theory.
