This article is an argument in favour of the importance of having different perspectives for different situations in marketing. Since the 1990s, relationship marketing has become an accepted stream in marketing research. However, this type of marketing consists of many different perspectives. Here, the network approach is covered. Its origin and its divergence from the mainstream marketing mix approach are discussed. It is concluded that Swedish culture and context influenced the development of the network approach. However, the network view is not pertinent to all marketing situations in Sweden and the approach is also useful outside of the Swedish context. Finally, it is argued that marketing research should benefit from many different perspectives and approaches that could be applicable to different marketing situations.

This article will argue that, despite customer-centric intent, marketing theory remains trapped in a firm-centric paradigm. How this apparent contradiction has endured is discussed critically with reference to what we see as four influential marketing perspectives. These perspectives are the 4Ps marketing mix, market-based assets, relationship marketing, and customer equity. Apart from the 4Ps mix, these marketing perspectives are seldom recognized as problematic. We argue that the firm-centric approach to value creation embedded in these four influential frameworks overwhelms marketing’s customer-centric intent. We also address the question, ‘can (or indeed should) marketing management be customer-centric?’ Our conclusion is that new directions of inquiry are needed, and we offer suggestions that might allow marketing the means to break free from its enduring, firm-centric paradigmatic trap

This chapter explores some of the principal characteristics used to define business markets and marketing. It establishes the key elements of business-to-business (B2B) marketing and makes comparisons with the better-known business-to-consumer (B2C) sector. This leads to a consideration of appropriate definitions, parameters and direction for the book. After setting out the main types of organisations that operate in the B2B sector and categorising the goods and services that they buy or sell, the chapter introduces ideas about the business marketing mix, perceived value, supply chains, interorganisational relationships and relationship marketing. This opening chapter lays down the vital foundations and key principles which are subsequently developed in the book.

Social marketing is a way to influence the behaviors of stakeholders in the healthcare system. This chapter will define the traditional transaction marketing concepts of exchange, segmentation, competition, the marketing mix, and audience orientation. Then it will describe the current paradigm shift to relationship marketing with its logic of collaboration and the cocreation of value. Relationship marketing is enhanced by the arrival of Internet-based “social media” such as blogs, file sharing sites, and social networking sites that place creativity and communication channels under “audience” control. These developments in marketing strategy and social software will profoundly affect the next generation of social marketing programs.
