The present paper discusses types of management uncertainty exemplified by the case study of a project of building a multifunctional harbor transshipping center. The analysis is based on the ideas and works of I. Fischer. The paper shows that the role of project management actors substantially influences risks and that change of the actor’s role leads to minimization of risks and elimination of uncertainty about project realization time. To analyze project risks the authors develop a complex model of risk assessment based on analysis of probability and impact level of undesired events. Probability of undesired events is presented as a matrix of risk ranks and a tool for analyzing project risks based on the matrix of risk ranks and FMEA analysis is developed.

The National Academy of Science has recommended that a risk of bias (RoB; credibility of the link between exposure and outcome) assessment be conducted on studies that are used as primary data sources for hazard identification and dose–response assessment. Few applications of such have been conducted. Using trichloroethylene and congenital heart defects (CHDs) as a case study, we explore the role of RoB in chemical risk assessment using the National Toxicology Program’s Office of Health Assessment and Translation RoB tool. Selected questions were tailored to evaluation of CHD and then applied to 12 experimental animal studies and 9 epidemiological studies. Results demonstrated that the inconsistent findings of a single animal study were likely explained by the limitations in study design assessed via RoB (eg, lack of concurrent controls, unvalidated method for assessing outcome, unreliable statistical methods, etc). Such limitations considered in the context of the body of evidence render the study not sufficiently reliable for the development of toxicity reference values. The case study highlights the utility of RoB as part of a robust risk assessment process and specifically demonstrates the role RoB can play in objectively selecting candidate data sets to develop toxicity values.

PurposeThe authors examine the extent to which a controller's involvement in project functions (namely definition and scope, organization, constraints management and risk management) cascades down to project performance.Design/methodology/approachThe authors test the study’s framework using survey data from a sample of project leaders in German and Swiss firms. Responses were analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) technique.FindingsThe authors find that controllers contribute to project success via the previously described project functions. Further, the study reveals the crucial role of controllers in managing uncertainty and project risks.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough the arguments used in this research were not country specific and suggest that the findings of this study also apply to the controller professional in general, this study clearly acknowledges that further research is needed to address the effects of this role in different jurisdictions given the specific characteristics of controllers acting in German-speaking countries.Practical implicationsThe authors provide insights on the role of controllers at an operational level, like project management, highlighting the need for controllers to support an effective project governance.Originality/valueThe authors add to the literature by examining the role of controllers in highly knowledge-intensive, highly pressured, task-driven, interdependent and dynamic operational settings, thus contributing to a better understanding of how controllers function at an operational level. The authors also strengthen a broader role of controllers in project management that goes beyond their historical controlling activities to include more modern functions, extending previous studies analyzing their professional identity.

The definition of the essence of an object of management in economics is an indispensable component of professional risk management. Since the national risk management theory is just being formed, the need to find a clear and comprehensive definition for the notion "risks" is especially topical. Capital valuation is one of the most important issues, which needs to be solved by companies during ROI studies. This article makes an attempt to study the role of risk management in the implementation of investment projects. The main purpose of this article is to identify the main regularities which determine the peculiarities of risk assessment in business, being the key element facilitating the organization of investment projects. The objectives have been as follows: to review the basic concepts of risk management; to study its components in business; to reflect the system and risk management principles, and to carry out risk assessment; to consider the main kinds of risks in the business area. The article describes various types of investment and project risks, risk analysis methods for investment projects, as well as efficiency indicators of investment projects, and provides an analysis of risk factors and uncertainties during the development of investment projects. The peculiarities of the practical use of project risks’ analysis methods have been studied. Risk assessment methods for an investment project help evaluate its feasibility, the time within which it will start being profitable, as well as the probabilistic volume of its future profits. Investment project valuation models have been analyzed, in particular, the CAPM model for emerging capital markets. The DCF method has been studied, being the base for assessing the attractiveness of business in general and a company's investment project in particular.

ABSTRACT An oil spill risk assessment study should show the estimated relationship between the magnitude of an adverse environmental impact and the probability of an impact's equaling or exceeding that magnitude. Any unacceptably large impact must have an acceptably low probability of occurrence. Unless such probabilities are correctly estimated, no informed decision can be made about the acceptability of a proposed project. In this paper, we review the basic rules of the calculus of probabilities, demonstrate their application to oil spill risk calculations, and discuss the analysis of data for estimating very low probabilities and the role of computer simulation models to estimate environmental effects. Throughout, a case study is used to point out the pitfalls and errors one should try to avoid. In this example, the correction of a number of errors in the probability calculations resulted in a 37-fold reduction in the collision spill probability estimate and a 3,500-fold reduction in the grounding spill risk estimate. Grounding spills had been estimated to have by far the most adverse environmental impacts. The corrections substantially reduced the expected values of the impacts.

This chapter presents a case study of the project planning and management processes—originally employed at a university instructional development center—now utilized in an evolved format at LearnSomething, A Xerox Company (LS). The authors focus upon the overall course development process, which includes the following three matters: project organizational structure, project management processes, the role of corporate culture in the company’s work and its effect on staff. In addition, the authors describe the challenges and pitfalls encountered in simultaneously managing multiple eLearning projects along with lessons learned. The authors’ prime intent is to describe in detailed case study format how eLearning projects are successfully managed and completed at LearnSomething. The writers describe effective project management procedures and strategies, which LS has utilized in successfully planning, designing, developing, evaluating, and delivering multiple eLearning courses for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the first filmmaking endeavour of its kind: multiple separate superhero films taking place within a single diegetic world, united in a single sequel, The Avengers (2012). The third highest-grossing film in history, The Avengers drew not only on the success of its prequels, its established characters and its stars, but perhaps most of all on its writer-director, cult favourite television auteur Joss Whedon. Having delivered on the film, and with considerable experience in creating quirky, character-based telefantasy, Whedon was a natural choice for Marvel for creating the MCU's first expansion into television, ABC’s Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.LD (ABC Studios/Marvel Television/Mutant Enemy, 2013- ). This article examines the use of Whedon's name and his presence in the promotional discourse of Agents of S.H.I.E.LD as a case study of the role of the media creator in extending the transmedia brand. With the names of creators becoming increasingly visible in association with many texts where they were previously absent, such as television series and blockbuster Hollywood cinema, the use of the author name as a brand name sees growing prevalence across the screen industries. In theorizing transmedia storytelling, Elizabeth Evans (2010) has, accordingly, named authorship as one of the key dimensions in which cohesion is established. In this context, I examine the use of Whedon's involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where the discourse of authorship operates as a guarantor of consistency and authenticity. Looking at the promotional surround of the series in the form of trailers, interviews and convention panels, I track the writer-director's function in validating the brand extension, acting as the glue that holds the transmedia universe together. I examine Whedon's place within the matrix of the franchise, as his authorship is incorporated into and potentially competes with Marvel Studios' own brand.
