In epoxy based polymeric nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, the nonlinear optically active moiety forms crosslink between polymer chains. Some of the important moieties include 4, 4'diamino diphenyl sulfone (DADS). We have examined second harmonic generation (SHG) in DADS and have compared it with 4, 4'diamino diphenyl methane (DADM). The geometry optimization suggests that both molecules have Λ-shaped structure. The theoretical calculations as well as experimental observations of SHG in both the molecules suggest the suitability of DADS over DADM for making polymeric NLO materials.

Two RE-based quaternary metal chalcogenides EuCdGeQ4 (Q = S, Se) are discovered. They possess many attractive properties as preferred IR NLO materials including large band gaps, phase-matched intense SHG and congruent melting behavior.

ABSTRACTAn attractive and challenging approach to the construction of robust, thin film materials with large second-order optical nonlinearities is the covalent self-assembly of aligned arrays of high-β molecular chromophores into multilayer superlattices. In this paper, we describe the dispersion of second harmonic generation (SHG) in a self-assembled (SA) monolayer containing a stilbazolium chromophore. The frequency-dependent measurements were performed on 25 Å thick monolayers on glass using a tunable (0.4–2 μm) light source based on optical parametric amplification (OPA). The SHG spectrum contains a clear two-photon resonance at hω = 1.3eV. The maximum in the second-order susceptibility coincides with a low energy chromophore-centered charge-transfer excitation at 480 nm. The experimental SHG dispersion values compare favorably with theoretical results computed using a sum-over-states (SOS) formalism. However, the measured values exhibit a somewhat broader band response than the theoretical curve, and the origin of this behavior is discussed.

Cerenkov-type optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) in organic-crystalline waveguides has been investgated. Various techniques for the fabrication of organic-crystalline waveguides are described. Planar and channel waveguides have been fabricated using an organic nonlinear optical crystal (−)2-(α-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine (MBANP). Visible blue light has been obtained in an MBANP rib waveguide using a laser-diode source. Theoretical analysis of Cerenkov-type SHG in planar waveguides is made, and a simple analytic expression for second-harmonic power is derived. Optimum conditions for attaining high conversion efficiency are discussed on the basis of the theoretical calculations.

Para-nitroaniline(p- NA )–dimethyl formamide (DMF) adduct has been synthesized chemically. The formation of adduct is confirmed via UV, FTIR, CHN analyses and other techniques. The adduct formation takes place due to dipolar interaction and hydrogen bonding. The parent polar molecules, viz. p- NA and DMF, crystallize in symmetric forms and do not exhibit optical second harmonic generation (SHG). The adduct has been found to exhibit a considerable SHG efficiency and hence this confirms that the adduct crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric form. These observations suggest a Λ-shaped structure of the molecule, which is further established theoretically via geometry optimization.
