Firms with higher book equity relative to market capitalization earn a premium, leading to sorting into value and growth. This sorting implies that any balance sheet additions are risky. This paper provides evidence that what a firm holds on its balance sheet matters, and value occurs with high book-to-market ratios. Each holding relative to firm market capitalization has a risk premium, varying across holdings. Among US firms quarterly for 1980–2016, doubling holdings of cash and receivables relative to market capitalization earn premiums of at least 1%, as does taking on debt. These account for the entire value premium, since physicals, intangibles and payables are not risky. The value premium derives from the composition of the firm’s assets.

Subject. This article explores the market valuation ratios of the twenty five leading public oil and gas companies between 2006 and 2018. Objectives. The article aims to identify key trends in the changes in market valuations of the largest public oil and gas companies, and identify the factors that have caused these changes. Methods. For the study, I used comparative, and financial and economic analyses, and generalization of materials of the companies' consolidated financial statements. Results. The article shows certain changes in the main indicators of market valuation of the leading public oil and gas companies and identifies the main factors that contributed to these changes. It establishes that the most significant for comparison and valuation are ratios based on balance sheet values of assets and equity, and EBITDA, DACF and net income ratios are appropriate as auxiliary ratios. The article says that the exchange segment of the industry has increased the debt load, so instead of market capitalization as a component of the coefficients of this group, it is advisable to apply the company's value indicator. Conclusions and Relevance. The article concludes that the market sentiments towards the stock market segment of the global oil and gas industry are getting impaired. This is quite natural against the background of falling profitability of most leading companies. The results of the study can be useful in evaluating, forecasting and developing measures to increase the market capitalization and value of public oil and gas companies.

We provide a critical review of macroeconomic models used for monetary policy at central banks from a finance perspective. We review the history of monetary policy modeling, survey the core monetary models used by major central banks, and construct an illustrative model for those readers who are unfamiliar with the literature. Within this framework, we highlight several important limitations of current models and methods, including the fact that local-linearization approximations omit important nonlinear dynamics, yielding biased impulse-response analysis and parameter estimates. We also propose new features for the next generation of macrofinancial policy models, including a substantial role for the financial sector, the government balance sheet, and unconventional monetary policies; heterogeneity, reallocation, and redistribution effects;the macroeconomic impact of large nonlinear risk premium dynamics; time-varying uncertainty; financial sector and systemic risks; imperfect product market and markups; and further advances in solution, estimation, and evaluation methods for dynamic quantitative structural models.

Subject. This article explores the ratios of the company's market capitalization and value to the balance sheet value of assets and equity of the twenty five leading public oil and gas companies between 2008 and 2018. Objectives. The article aims to identify key trends in the changes in market capitalization and value ratios of the company to the balance sheet value of assets and equity of the largest public oil and gas companies, identify the factors that have caused these changes, and establish the applicability of these multipliers to estimate the value of the business within the oil and gas industry. Methods. For the study, I used comparative, and financial and economic analyses, and generalization of materials of the companies' consolidated financial statements. Results. The article establishes that the multipliers studied are acceptable for assessing the value of oil and gas companies, but it is preferable to use asset-based ratios. Conclusions and Relevance. The overall decline in profitability and the increase in debt load in the stock exchange sector of the global oil and gas industry should be taken into account when using multipliers based on assets and shareholder capital in the assessment of the value of oil and gas corporations through a comparative approach. The results of the study can be used to assess the possible value of oil and gas assets as part of a comparative approach and develop measures to increase the market capitalization of public oil and gas companies.

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the repercussions and impact of corporate real estate on the returns of non-real-estate equities in a time-series setting. While the ownership of real estate constitutes a considerable proportion of most listed firms’ balance sheet, in the existing literature, whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks associated with corporate real estate, is the subject of controversy. Design/methodology/approach – The role of corporate real estate ownership in the pricing of returns is examined, after taking well-documented systematic risk factors into account. Employing a data sample from 1999 to 2014, the conditions and characteristics faced by firms with distinct levels of corporate real estate holdings are identified and analyzed. Findings – The findings reveal that corporate real estate intensity indeed serves as a priced determinant in the German stock market. Among other results, the real-estate-specific risk factor shows countercyclical patterns and is particularly relevant for companies within the manufacturing sector. Practical implications – The findings provide new insights into the interpretation of corporate real estate and expected general equity returns. Thus, the present analysis is of particular interest for investors, as well as the management boards of listed companies. Originality/value – To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first paper to investigate the ownership of corporate real estate as a priced factor for German equities, after accounting for the well-documented systematic risk factors, namely, market (market risk premium), size (small minus big) and book-to-market-ratio (BE/ME) (high minus low).

This study provides new insights to predict the excess return of a security. As if factor premia are getting influenced by the sentiments that means sentiments are ultimately affecting the excess return of a security. To meet the objective, a composite index developed by Baker and Wurgler is used as sentiment proxy. Monthly data are used from July 1965 to September 2015 in U.S. context. Granger casualty, Vector Autoregression (VAR), and Fama–Macbeth regression are applied to get the results. Results show that investor sentiments significantly drive the Fama factors’ premia: size premium and profitability premium. Sentiments also contain some information to explain the investment premia but fail to explain the market risk premium and value premium. Furthermore, results suggest that sentiments increase the explanatory power of model measured by R square. In short, this study suggests that investor sentiments play a role in explaining the Fama–French five-factor premia.
