The power conversion efficiency of p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) is determined by the kinetics of hole injection and dye-regeneration reaction at the dye/electrolyte interface. In this work, the photochemical regeneration kinetics of dye adsorbed on CuCrO 2 mesoporous film was investigated by using scanning electrochemical microscopy with feedback mode. Organic P1 and C343 sensitizers in combination with iodide-based and thiolate-based electrolytes were selected to understand the effect of sensitizers and redox shuttles on dye-regeneration process. A fast regeneration kinetic rate constant was confirmed in thiolate-based sample compared with iodide-based electrolyte, indicating that the organic redox shuttle was an efficient mediator to optimize the performance of p-type DSSC.

The dye regeneration in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is improved by optimizing the charge separation at the level of the sensitized semiconductor treatment of the mesoporous electrode by TiCl4 that passivates the surface for back electron transfer reactions. The dye-regeneration kinetics is analyzed for DN216- and D358-sensitized porous TiO2 electrodes with and without a TiCl4 treatment by means of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Different mass transport limitation of the [Co(bpy)3]3+ mediator through the porous electrode is found for the comparison of the structurally similar dyes but cannot be detected for the thin layer introduced by the TiCl4 treatment. Phototransient measurements are conducted directly in the SECM cell without any intermediated sample manipulation. The results from those measurements corroborate the findings from steady state SECM measurements.

Ultrafast hole injection from photoexcited diketopyrrolopyrrole-based dyes into mesoporous NiO films was followed by charge recombination that spanned time scales from pico- to microseconds, which was reflected in large variations in dye regeneration and device solar energy conversion efficiencies.
