The Unique Games Conjecture has pinned down the approximability of all constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), showing that a natural semidefinite programming relaxation offers the optimal worst-case approximation ratio for any CSP. This elegant picture, however, does not apply for CSP instances that are perfectly satisfiable, due to the imperfect completeness inherent in the Unique Games Conjecture. This work is motivated by the pursuit of a better understanding of the approximability of perfectly satisfiable instances of CSPs. We prove that an “almost Unique” version of Label Cover can be approximated within a constant factor on satisfiable instances. Our main conceptual contribution is the formulation of a (hypergraph) version of Label Cover that we call V Label Cover . Assuming a conjecture concerning the inapproximability of V Label Cover on perfectly satisfiable instances, we prove the following implications: • There is an absolute constant c 0 such that for k ≥ 3, given a satisfiable instance of Boolean k -CSP, it is hard to find an assignment satisfying more than c 0 k 2 /2 k fraction of the constraints. • Given a k -uniform hypergraph, k ≥ 2, for all ε > 0, it is hard to tell if it is q -strongly colorable or has no independent set with an ε fraction of vertices, where q =⌈ k +√ k -1/2⌉. • Given a k -uniform hypergraph, k ≥ 3, for all ε > 0, it is hard to tell if it is ( k -1)-rainbow colorable or has no independent set with an ε fraction of vertices.

Finding actions that satisfy the constraints imposed by both external inputs and internal representations is central to decision making. We demonstrate that some important classes of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) can be solved by networks composed of homogeneous cooperative-competitive modules that have connectivity similar to motifs observed in the superficial layers of neocortex. The winner-take-all modules are sparsely coupled by programming neurons that embed the constraints onto the otherwise homogeneous modular computational substrate. We show rules that embed any instance of the CSP's planar four-color graph coloring, maximum independent set, and sudoku on this substrate and provide mathematical proofs that guarantee these graph coloring problems will convergence to a solution. The network is composed of nonsaturating linear threshold neurons. Their lack of right saturation allows the overall network to explore the problem space driven through the unstable dynamics generated by recurrent excitation. The direction of exploration is steered by the constraint neurons. While many problems can be solved using only linear inhibitory constraints, network performance on hard problems benefits significantly when these negative constraints are implemented by nonlinear multiplicative inhibition. Overall, our results demonstrate the importance of instability rather than stability in network computation and offer insight into the computational role of dual inhibitory mechanisms in neural circuits.

Domain filtering local consistencies, such as inverse consistencies, that only delete values and do not add new constraints are particularly useful in Constraint Programming. Although many such consistencies for binary constraints have been proposed and evaluated, the situation with non-binary constraints is quite different. Only very recently have domain filtering consistencies stronger than GAC started to attract interest. Following this line of research, we define a number of strong domain filtering consistencies for non-binary constraints and theoretically compare their pruning power. We prove that three of these consistencies are equivalent to maxRPC in binary CSPs while another is equivalent to PIC. We also describe a generic algorithm for domain filtering consistencies in non-binary CSPs. We show how this algorithm can be instantiated to enforce some of the proposed consistencies and analyze the worst-case complexities of the resulting algorithms. Finally, we make a preliminary empirical study.

We describe a unified, lazy, declarative framework for solving constraint satisfaction problems, an important subclass of combinatorial search problems. These problems are both practically significant and computationally hard. Finding solutions involves combining good general-purpose search algorithms with problem-specific heuristics. Conventional imperative algorithms are usually implemented and presented monolithically, which makes them hard to understand and reuse, even though new algorithms often are combinations of simpler ones. Lazy functional languages, such as Haskell, encourage modular structuring of search algorithms by separating the generation and testing of potential solutions into distinct functions communicating through an explicit, lazy intermediate data structure. But only relatively simple search algorithms have been treated this way in the past. Our framework uses a generic generation and pruning algorithm parameterized by a labeling function that annotates search trees with conflict sets. We show that many advanced imperative search algorithms, including conflict-directed backjumping, backmarking, minimal forward checking, and fail-first dynamic variable ordering, can be obtained by suitable instantiation of the labeling function. More importantly, arbitrary combinations of these algorithms can be built by simply composing their labeling functions. Our modular algorithms are as efficient as the monolithic imperative algorithms in the sense that they make the same number of consistency checks, and most of our algorithms are within a constant factor of their imperative counterparts in runtime and space usage. We believe our framework is especially well-suited for experimenting to find good combinations of algorithms for specific problems.

Random constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) have been studied extensively using statistical physics techniques. They provide a benchmark to study average case scenarios instead of the worst case one. The interplay between statistical physics of disordered systems and computer science has brought new light into the realm of computational complexity theory, by introducing the notion of clustering of solutions, related to replica symmetry breaking. However, the class of problems in which clustering has been studied often involve discrete degrees of freedom: standard random CSPs are random (aka disordered Ising models) or random coloring problems (aka disordered Potts models). In this work we consider instead problems that involve continuous degrees of freedom. The simplest prototype of these problems is the perceptron. Here we discuss in detail the full phase diagram of the model. In the regions of parameter space where the problem is non-convex, leading to multiple disconnected clusters of solutions, the solution is critical at the SAT/UNSAT threshold and lies in the same universality class of the jamming transition of soft spheres. We show how the critical behavior at the satisfiability threshold emerges, and we compute the critical exponents associated to the approach to the transition from both the SAT and UNSAT phase. We conjecture that there is a large universality class of non-convex continuous CSPs whose SAT-UNSAT threshold is described by the same scaling solution.

Many combinatorial optimization problems can be phrased in the language of constraint satisfaction problems. We introduce a graph neural network architecture for solving such optimization problems. The architecture is generic; it works for all binary constraint satisfaction problems. Training is unsupervised, and it is sufficient to train on relatively small instances; the resulting networks perform well on much larger instances (at least 10-times larger). We experimentally evaluate our approach for a variety of problems, including Maximum Cut and Maximum Independent Set. Despite being generic, we show that our approach matches or surpasses most greedy and semi-definite programming based algorithms and sometimes even outperforms state-of-the-art heuristics for the specific problems.

I prove that an implementation technique for scanning lists in backtracking search algorithms is optimal. The result applies to a simple general framework, which I present: applications include watched literal unit propagation in SAT and a number of examples in constraint satisfaction. Techniques like watched literals are known to be highly space efficient and effective in practice. When implemented in the `circular' approach described here, these techniques also have optimal run time per branch in big-O terms when amortized across a search tree. This also applies when multiple list elements must be found. The constant factor overhead of the worst case is only 2. Replacing the existing non-optimal implementation of unit propagation in MiniSat speeds up propagation by 29%, though this is not enough to improve overall run time significantly.

We study the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) parameterized by a constraint language Γ (CSPΓ) and how the choice of Γ affects its worst-case time complexity. Under the exponential-time hypothesis (ETH), we rule out the existence of subexponential algorithms for finite-domain NP-complete CSPΓ problems. This extends to certain infinite-domain CSPs and structurally restricted problems. For CSPs with finite domain D and where all unary relations are available, we identify a relation S D such that the time complexity of the NP-complete problem CSP({ S D }) is a lower bound for all NP-complete CSPs of this kind. We also prove that the time complexity of CSP({ S D }) strictly decreases when |D| increases (unless the ETH is false) and provide stronger complexity results in the special case when |D|=3.

Graph Theory International audience We introduce a binary parameter on optimisation problems called separation. The parameter is used to relate the approximation ratios of different optimisation problems; in other words, we can convert approximability (and non-approximability) result for one problem into (non)-approximability results for other problems. Our main application is the problem (weighted) maximum H-colourable subgraph (Max H-Col), which is a restriction of the general maximum constraint satisfaction problem (Max CSP) to a single, binary, and symmetric relation. Using known approximation ratios for Max k-cut, we obtain general asymptotic approximability results for Max H-Col for an arbitrary graph H. For several classes of graphs, we provide near-optimal results under the unique games conjecture. We also investigate separation as a graph parameter. In this vein, we study its properties on circular complete graphs. Furthermore, we establish a close connection to work by Šámal on cubical colourings of graphs. This connection shows that our parameter is closely related to a special type of chromatic number. We believe that this insight may turn out to be crucial for understanding the behaviour of the parameter, and in the longer term, for understanding the approximability of optimisation problems such as Max H-Col.
