SummaryPlatelets deprived of calcium and incubated at 37° C for 10 min lose their ability to bind fibrinogen or aggregate with ADP when adequate concentrations of calcium are restored. Since the calcium complex of glycoproteins (GP) IIb and IIIa is the presumed receptor for fibrinogen, it seemed appropriate to examine the behavior of these glycoproteins in incubated non-aggregable platelets. No differences were noted in the electrophoretic pattern of nonaggregable EDTA-treated and aggregable control CaEDTA-treated platelets when SDS gels of Triton X- 114 fractions were stained with silver. GP IIb and IIIa were extracted from either nonaggregable EDTA-treated platelets or aggregable control platelets with calcium-Tris-Triton buffer and subjected to sucrose density gradient centrifugation or crossed immunoelectrophoresis. With both types of platelets, these glycoproteins formed a complex in the presence of calcium. If the glycoproteins were extracted with EDTA-Tris-Triton buffer, or if Triton-solubilized platelet membranes were incubated with EGTA at 37° C for 30 min, GP IIb and IIIa were unable to form a complex in the presence of calcium. We conclude that inability of extracted GP IIb and IIIa to combine in the presence of calcium is not responsible for the irreversible loss of aggregability that occurs when whole platelets are incubated with EDTA at 37° C.

Today, the use of SCADA data for predictive maintenance and forecasting of wind turbines in wind farms is gaining popularity due to the low cost of this solution compared to others that require the installation of additional equipment. SCADA data provides four statistical measures (mean, standard deviation, maximum value, and minimum value) of hundreds of wind turbine magnitudes, usually in a 5-min or 10-min interval. Several studies have analysed the loss of information associated with the reduction of information when using five minutes instead of four seconds as a sampling frequency, or when compressing a time series recorded at 5 min to 10 min, concluding that some, but not all, of these magnitudes are seriously affected. However, to our knowledge, there are no studies on increasing the time interval beyond 10 min to take these four statistical values, and how this aggregation affects prognosis models. Our work shows that, despite the irreversible loss of information that occurs in the first 5 min, increasing the time considered to take the four representative statistical values improves the performance of the predicted targets in normality models.

According to clinical and pre-clinical studies, oxidative stress and its consequences may be the cause or, at least, a contributing factor, to a large number of neurodegenerative diseases. These diseases include common and debilitating disorders, characterized by progressive and irreversible loss of neurons in specific regions of the brain. The most common neurodegenerative diseases are Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been extensively studied since its discovery in 1957. It is a component of the electron transportation chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, generating energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The property of CoQ10 to act as an antioxidant or a pro-oxidant, suggests that it also plays an important role in the modulation of redox cellular status under physiological and pathological conditions, also performing a role in the ageing process. In several animal models of neurodegenerative diseases, CoQ10 has shown beneficial effects in reducing disease progression. However, further studies are needed to assess the outcome and effectiveness of CoQ10 before exposing patients to unnecessary health risks at significant costs.

The capacity for variation was studied using 10- to 18-month-old cultures of the main variants of two Moroccan isolates of Verticillium albo-atrum R. et B. (microsclerotial form). The hyaline variants were very stable and never returned to the wild type. The other variants gave rise to new variants which differed even more from the wild type but never reverted. A "mixed" type of variant, hyaline but with patches or sectors resembling the wild type, gave rise to wild or hyaline cultures when subcultured, depending on the conditions of transfer. All other variation tended toward a stronger alteration of sclerogenesis without reversing and an irreversible loss of ability to produce microsclerotia (hyaline cultures).
