Sliding mechanic has become a popular method for space closure with developments in preadjusted edgewise appliance. Furthermore, various space closing auxiliaries have been developed and evaluated extensively for their clinical efficiency. Their effectiveness enhanced with optimum force magnitude and low-load deflection rate (LDR)/force decay. With the advent of NiTi springs in orthodontics, LDRs have been markedly reduced. For use of NiTi, clinician has to depend upon prefabricated closed coil springs. “Open Coil Retraction Spring (OCRS)” is developed utilizing NiTi open-coil spring for orthodontic space closure. This paper describes fabrication and clinical application of OCRS which have number of advantages. It sustains low LDR with optimum force magnitude. Its design is adjustable for desired length and force level. It is fail-safe for both activation and deactivation (i.e., it cannot be over activated, and decompression limit of open coil is also controlled by the operator, resp.). A possibility to offset the OCRS away from mucosa helps to reduce its soft-tissue impingement.

This paper examines the forces produced by elastomeric chains and NiTi closed coil springs during postextraction space closure. 58 postextraction spaces were analyzed, divided into two groups according to the applied mechanism. Postextraction spaces were monitored for 3 months when force strength and postextraction space width measurements were made. The measurements were carried out every 4 weeks, initially during activation of the mechanism and at the end of the active phase. The results show that elastomeric chains have more force decay over time, with the smaller amount of space closure width than NiTi closed coil springs. Frictionless mechanics for extraction space closure is one of the commonly used method in orthodontic practice. The ‘Mouse” loop is a new design for efficient and low friction space closure. The 'Mouse' loop has biomechanical advantages of increased range of activation and low load deflection rate. A case report is presented for the application of the loop. In the case report, a deciduous canine was extracted and its space was closed with the help of the 'Mouse' loop. The space of the deciduous canine was closed within five months without any clinical disadvantage.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of three commercially available aerated drinks on percentage of force decay of elastomeric chains used for orthodontic space closure. Materials & Method: Commercially available closed grey and clear elastomeric chains from two manufacturers were used in the study. The test solutions were distilled water (control), popular lemon based aerated drink, an orange based aerated drink and an aerated cola drink. Four acrylic resin jigs were constructed to provide a framework to simulate the distance between the permanent canine and first molar. The elastomeric chains were stretched and engaged between the two attachments. Jig I, II and III were immersed in the cola, orange and aerated lemon drink respectively for a period of two hours daily. Jig IV (control) was immersed in distilled water. Force levels were evaluated at the time intervals of 0 hours, 2 hrs, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, 3 days, 5 days and 7 days with a mechanical force gauge. Result: Force decay was statistically significant at T1 i.e. 2 hrs post immersion for all drinks compared. This decay was the highest for the elastomeric chains immersed in orange based drink followed by cola, lemon and the control. There was no significant difference between the two tested elastomeric chains. Conclusion: History recording should take cognizance of consumption of aerated drinks and their effect on orthodontic space closure.

Introduction: Due to the fundamental role of esthetics in the outcomes of dental treatments, especially in the anterior region (esthetic zone), the necessity of considering the matter of esthetics in clinical studies has become into focus in the current era. The aim of this study was the evaluation of esthetic outcomes of two treatment protocols in the treatment of congenital uni-lateral missing of maxillary lateral incisors as well as patient satisfaction from the treatment outcomes. Methods: in this study the sample size was 24 people (16 women and 8 men), These individuals sought dental treatment for replacement of the congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor. Convenience sampling method was used and patients were divided into two groups regarding the kind of treatment they received. The two treatment protocols included: 1. Space closure by means of orthodontic treatment and then reshaping the canines; and 2. Space regaining by means of orthodontic treatment and replacing the lateral incisor with dental implants. Photographs of patients were acquired from the frontal view with retraction of the lips using digital cameras. Photographs were evaluated for Pink esthetic score. Results: No significant difference was detected between the two study groups in the evaluated factors in this study. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that there is no significant difference in esthetic results in the two groups. Furthermore, both groups lead to similar results in patient satisfaction from treatment outcomes.

Objective: To evaluate and compare the leptin levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and rate of canine retraction using an elastomeric chain and nickel–titanium (NiTi) closed coil spring. Design: In vivo, clinical study. Setting: Orthodontic department at ITS Centre for Dental Studies and Research, Ghaziabad, India. Participants: Twenty-seven patients reported to the Department of Orthodontics at ITS Centre for Dental Studies and Research. Methods: Twenty-seven patients were included in the study in which canine retraction was carried out with an elastomeric chain and NiTi closed coil spring on either side of the arch applying 150 g of force on both sides. GCF samples were collected before the commencement of canine retraction, on the first, seventh and 21st day after application of force and were analysed for leptin levels by the ELISA technique. Impressions for the study model were taken at baseline and after 21 days to measure the rate of tooth movement bilaterally with an electronic digital calliper. Results: The results obtained within both groups showed a significant decrease in leptin levels from baseline to 21 days ( P = 0.0001). There was no significant difference in leptin levels between both groups, but leptin levels decreased more in the NiTi closed coil spring group. The rate of tooth movement is not significantly different between both groups, but space closure is faster in the NiTi closed coil spring group. Conclusions: Leptin levels in GCF showed a significant decrease during canine retraction using an elastomeric chain and NiTi coil spring; there was no significant difference in the rate of tooth movement between both the groups.

Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis is the most prevalent developmental dental anomaly. The management of missing lateral incisor was either closure using canine as substitution or creation of space orthodontically for prosthetic replacement. A careful diagnosis and treatment plan are deemed essential to address the patient’s needs as the spacing is present in the esthetic region. Such problem is very challenging for orthodontists, prosthodontists, and general practitioners. This case report describes the orthodontic management of a 22-year-old adult female patient with missing upper left lateral incisor tooth and upper anterior spacing by closing the space with canine lateralization and reshaping to simulate it with the lateral incisor. However, some modifications in the treatment mechanics are crucial to achieve the optimal esthetic and to improve the occlusion. Space closure with canine lateralization option seems less invasive, treatment can be completed relatively in a short period of time, and its adaptation with the facial changes throughout life without having artificial prosthesis provided other factors favoring for this option.
