A sparse linear system constitutes a valid model for a broad range of physical systems, such as electric power networks, industrial processes, control systems or traffic models. The physical magnitudes in those systems may be directly measured by means of sensor networks that, in conjunction with data obtained from contextual and boundary constraints, allow the estimation of the state of the systems. The term observability refers to the capability of estimating the state variables of a system based on the available information. In the case of linear systems, diffierent graphical approaches were developed to address this issue. In this paper a new unified graph based technique is proposed in order to determine the observability of a sparse linear physical system or, at least, a system that can be linearized after a first order derivative, using a given sensor set. A network associated to a linear equation system is introduced, which allows addressing and solving three related problems: the characterization of those cases for which algebraic and topological observability analysis return contradictory results; the characterization of a necessary and sufficient condition for topological observability; the determination of the maximum observable subsystem in case of unobservability. Two examples illustrate the developed techniques.

Positive fractional continuous-time linear systems with singular pencils A method for checking the positivity and finding the solution to the positive fractional descriptor continuous-time linear systems with singular pencils is proposed. The method is based on elementary row and column operations of the fractional descriptor systems to equivalent standard systems with some algebraic constraints on state variables and inputs. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the fractional descriptor systems are established.

This paper is concerned with the design of a finite-time positive observer (FTPO) for continuous-time positive linear systems, which is robust regarding the L2-gain performance. In positive observers, the estimation of the state variables is always nonnegative. In contrast to previous positive observers with asymptotic convergence, an FTPO estimates positive state variables in a finite time. The proposed FTPO observer, using two Identity Luenberger observers and based on the impulsive framework, estimates exactly the state variables of positive systems in a predetermined time interval. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to guarantee the L2-gain performance of the estimation error. Finally, the performance and robustness of the proposed FTPO are validated using numerical simulations.

Abstract. The stability problem of continuous-time linear systems described by the state equation consisting of n subsystems with different fractional orders of derivatives of the state variables has been considered. The methods for asymptotic stability checking have been given. The method proposed in the general case is based on the Argument Principle and it is similar to the modified Mikhailov stability criterion known from the stability theory of natural order systems. The considerations are illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract The problem of zeroing of the state variables in fractional descriptor electrical circuits by state-feedbacks is formulated and solved. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of gain matrices such that the state variables of closed-loop systems are zero for time greater zero are established. The procedure of choice of the gain matrices is demonstrated on simple descriptor electrical circuits with regular pencils

Abstract In the paper the problems of practical stability and asymptotic stability of fractional discrete-time linear systems are addressed. Necessary and sufficient conditions for practical stability and for asymptotic stability are established. The conditions are given in terms of eigenvalues of the state matrix of the system. In particular, it is shown that (similarly as in the case of fractional continuous-time linear systems) in the complex plane exists such a region, that location of all eigenvalues of the state matrix in this region is necessary and sufficient for asymptotic stability. The parametric description of boundary of this region is given. Moreover, it is shown that Schur stability of the state matrix (all eigenvalues have absolute values less than 1) is not necessary nor sufficient for asymptotic stability of the fractional discrete-time system. The considerations are illustrated by numerical examples.

Linear, stationary systems with multiple inputs when subject to performance indices quadratic in the state variables, but explicitly independent of the control variables, may be optimally governed by singular control. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimality of both partially singular control and totally singular control are obtained. Moreover, explicit formulae are presented for both open-loop and linear-feedback implementations of the optimal singular control.

A Semiring is an algebraic structure (S,+,x) such that (S,+) is a commutative Semigroup with identity element 0, (S,x) is a Semigroup with identity element 1, distributive property of multiplication over addition, and multiplication by 0 as an absorbent element in S. A linear equations system over a Semiring S is a pair (A,b)  where A is a matrix with entries in S  and b is a vector over S. This paper will be described as necessary or sufficient conditions of the solution of linear equations system over Semiring S viewed by matrix X  that satisfies AXA=A, with A in S.  For a matrix X that satisfies AXA=A, a linear equations system Ax=b has solution x=Xb+(I-XA)h with arbitrary h in S if and only if AXb=b.
