Traditional fault diagnosis methods of bearings detect characteristic defect frequencies in the envelope power spectrum of the vibration signal. These defect frequencies depend upon the inherently nonstationary shaft speed. Time-frequency and subband signal analysis of vibration signals has been used to deal with random variations in speed, whereas design variations require retraining a new instance of the classifier for each operating speed. This paper presents an automated approach for fault diagnosis in bearings based upon the 2D analysis of vibration acceleration signals under variable speed conditions. Images created from the vibration signals exhibit unique textures for each fault, which show minimal variation with shaft speed. Microtexture analysis of these images is used to generate distinctive fault signatures for each fault type, which can be used to detect those faults at different speeds. A k-nearest neighbor classifier trained using fault signatures generated for one operating speed is used to detect faults at all the other operating speeds. The proposed approach is tested on the bearing fault dataset of Case Western Reserve University, and the results are compared with those of a spectrum imaging-based approach.

Feature extraction is one of the most difficult aspects of mechanical fault diagnosis, and it is directly related to the accuracy of bearing fault diagnosis. In this study, improved permutation entropy (IPE) is defined as the feature for bearing fault diagnosis. In this method, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), a self-adaptive time-frequency analysis method, is used to process the vibration signals, and a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can thus be obtained. A feature extraction strategy based on statistical analysis is then presented for IPE, where the so-called optimal number of permutation entropy (PE) values used for an IPE is adaptively selected. The obtained IPE-based samples are then input to a support vector machine (SVM) model. Subsequently, a trained SVM can be constructed as the classifier for bearing fault diagnosis. Finally, experimental vibration signals are applied to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the results show that the proposed method can effectively and accurately diagnose bearing faults, such as inner race faults, outer race faults, and ball faults.

For the unsteady characteristics of a fault vibration signal from a wind turbine rolling bearing, a bearing fault diagnosis method based on adaptive local iterative filtering and approximate entropy is proposed. The adaptive local iterative filtering method is used to decompose original vibration signals into a finite number of stationary components. The components which comprise major fault information are selected for further analysis. The approximate entropy of the selected components is calculated as a fault feature value and input to a fault classifier. The classifier is based on the nearest neighbor algorithm. The vibration signals from a spherical roller bearing on a wind turbine in its normal state, with an outer race fault, an inner race fault and a roller fault are analyzed. The results show that the proposed method can accurately and efficiently identify the fault modes present in the rolling bearings of a wind turbine.

Variational mode decomposition is a new signal decomposition method, which can process non-linear and non-stationary signals. It can overcome the problems of mode mixing and compensate for the shortcomings in empirical mode decomposition. Permutation entropy is a method which can detect the randomness and kinetic mutation behavior of a time series. It can be considered for use in fault diagnosis. The complexity of wind power generation systems means that the randomness and kinetic mutation behavior of their vibration signals are displayed at different scales. Multi-scale permutation entropy analysis is therefore needed for such vibration signals. This research investigated a method based on variational mode decomposition and permutation entropy for the fault diagnosis of a wind turbine roller bearing. Variational mode decomposition was adopted to decompose the bearing vibration signal into its constituent components. The components containing key fault information were selected for the extraction of their permutation entropy. This entropy was used as a bearing fault characteristic value. The nearest neighbor algorithm was employed as a classifier to identify faults in a roller bearing. The experimental data showed that the proposed method can be applied to wind turbine roller bearing fault diagnosis.

Aiming at the feature extraction difficulty of vibration signals, an improved local binary pattern- (ILBP-) based diesel engine fault diagnosis approach is proposed. To effectively make use of the component spatial information in time-frequency images, local binary pattern (LBP) algorithm is applied. Also, in view of the problems that traditional LBP coding is easily interfered by singular pixel points and the relative spatial information is not prominent, an improved coding rule of the LBP operator is put forward in this paper. Compared with some typical LBP algorithms, computational complexity of the proposed ILBP algorithm is greatly reduced, and the coding sparsity is greatly improved. The ILBP operator is applied to fault diagnosis of BF4L1011F diesel engine with eight different valve conditions. For comparison, six kinds of time-frequency distribution are used to convert raw vibration signals into time-frequency images, and then circular LBP, rotation-invariant LBP, uniform LBP, and ILBP operator are applied for texture coding. Finally, nearest neighbor classifier (NNC) and support vector machine (SVM) are used for fault identification. The classification results show that the ILBP operator proposed in this paper can better describe the texture feature information in vibration time-frequency images of the diesel engine, and a good diagnostic effect can be achieved by combining wavelet packet (WP) distribution and ILBP.

Predicting bearing faults is an essential task in machine health monitoring because bearings are vital components of rotary machines, especially heavy motor machines. Moreover, indicating the degradation level of bearings will help factories plan maintenance schedules. With advancements in the extraction of useful information from vibration signals, diagnosis of motor failures by maintenance engineers can be gradually replaced by an automatic detection process. Especially, state-of-the-art methods using deep learning have contributed significantly to automatic fault diagnosis. This paper proposes a novel method for diagnosing bearing faults and their degradation level under variable shaft speed. In the proposed method, vibration signals are represented by spectrograms to apply deep learning methods through preprocessing using Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT). Then, feature extraction and health status classification are performed by a convolutional neural network (CNN), VGG16. According to our various experiments, our proposed method can achieve very high accuracy and robustness for bearing fault diagnosis even under noisy environments.

Abstract The adaptive chirp mode decomposition (ACMD) has good time-frequency representation results in analyzing chirp signals, while there is a time-frequency ambiguity problem in the analysis of variable speed planetary gearbox vibration signals. To address this problem, a planetary gearbox fault diagnosis method based on improved polynomial adaptive chirp mode decomposition wavelet is proposed (IPACMD). Using Adaptive chirp mode decomposition, the amplitude and instantaneous frequency of multiple signal components are estimated; To avoid over-decomposition to generate spurious signal components, the similarity conditional entropy is used to optimize the adaptive chirp mode decomposition threshold ;The polynomial chirp transform (PCT) using a polynomial function instead of the linear chirp kernel in the chirp transform to improve the time-frequency aggregation of the instantaneous frequency curve of each signal component and output high-resolution time-frequency representation results. Compared with the original method, the proposed method has better time-frequency aggregation and is more effective for the analysis of variable speed planetary gearbox vibration signals. The simulation and experimental study results show that the method can effectively identify the frequency components and time-frequency characteristics of the variable-speed planetary gearbox vibration signal and realize the fault diagnosis of the planetary gearbox.
