Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a widespread respiratory dysfunction that has attracted more and more attention in recent years. Recently, a large number of studies have shown that abnormal DNA methylation epigenetically silences genes necessary for the pathogenesis of human diseases. However, the exact mechanism of abnormal DNA methylation in OSAHS is still elusive. In this study, we downloaded the OSAHS data from the GEO database. Our data for the first time revealed 520 hypermethylated genes and 889 hypomethylated genes in OSAHS. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that these abnormal methylated genes exhibited an association with the regulation of angiogenesis, apoptosis, Wnt, and ERBB2 signaling pathways. PPI network analysis displayed the interactions among these genes and validated several hub genes, such as GPSM2, CCR8, TAS2R20, TAS2R4, and TAS2R5, which were related to regulating liganded Gi-activating GPCR and the transition of mitotic metaphase/anaphase. In conclusion, our study offers a new hint of understanding the molecular mechanisms in OSAHS progression and will provide OSAHS with newly generated innovative biomarkers.

Objective: To report a case of corneal neovascularization with secondary lipid keratopathy in a patient treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Case Report: A 49-year-old male had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome 10 years ago and has been treated with the application of a CPAP machine during night sleep ever since. For the past year, the patient had been complaining for ocular irritation and excessive tearing of the left eye on awakening. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed the presence of neovascularization and lipid exudation in the inferior third of the cornea of the left eye. Ocular patching during night sleep resulted in recession of the reported symptoms and shrinkage of the neovascularization, while the area of lipid exudation ceased to enlarge. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of corneal neovascularization in a patient using a CPAP machine for OSAHS.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) is a violation of breathing during sleep as a result of the closure of the upper airways, leading to a partial or complete cessation of air supply, the onset of hypoxia, and as a result, a transient decrease in the depth of sleep, followed by restoration of patency of the upper airways and air intake [1,2]. During a patient's sleep, such episodes can occur hundreds of times per night, which in the presence of clinical symptoms is called OSAS syndrome or obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome [3].

Introduction: Treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is surgical. The incidence of postoperative respiratory complications in this population is 5–25%. Aim: The aim of the authors was to present the preoperative evaluation and monitoring procedure elaborated in Heim Pál Children Hospital, Budapest. Method: 142 patients were involved in the study. Patient history was obtained and physical examination was performed in all cases. Thereafter, polysomnography was carried out, the severity of the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was determined, and the patients underwent tonsilloadenotomy. Results: 45 patients with mild, 50 patients with moderate and 47 patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were diagnosed. There was no complication in patients with mild disease, while complications were observed in 6 patients in the moderate group and 24 patients in the severe group (desaturation, apnea, stridor, stop breathing) (p<0.000). In patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, no significant difference was noted in preoperative apnoea-hypapnea index (p = 0.23) and in nadir oxygen saturation values (p = 0.73) between patients with and without complication. Conclusions: Patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome should be treated in hospital where pediatric intensive care unit is available. Orv. Hetil., 2014, 155(18), 703–707.
