In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the 2D inviscid Boussinesq equations with N being the buoyancy frequency. It is proved that for general initial data u 0 ∈ H s with s > 3 , the life span of the classical solutions satisfies T > C ln     N 3 / 4 .

In this paper, we investigate the life-span of classical solutions to hyperbolic inverse mean curvature flow. Under the condition that the curve can be expressed in the form of a graph, we derive a hyperbolic Monge–Ampère equation which can be reduced to a quasilinear hyperbolic system in terms of Riemann invariants. By the theory on the local solution for the Cauchy problem of the quasilinear hyperbolic system, we discuss life-span of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of hyperbolic inverse mean curvature.

Abstract This article studies the Cauchy problem for systems of semi-linear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$ with nonlinear terms satisfying the null conditions. We construct future global-in-time classical solutions with arbitrarily large initial energy. The choice of the large Cauchy initial data is inspired by Christodoulou's characteristic initial data in his work [2] on formation of black holes. The main innovation of the current work is that we discovered a relaxed energy ansatz which allows us to prove decay-in-time-estimate. Therefore, the new estimates can also be applied in studying the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations.

AbstractThe Kuramoto–Velarde equation describes slow space-time variations of disturbances at interfaces, diffusion–reaction fronts and plasma instability fronts. It also describes Benard–Marangoni cells that occur when there is large surface tension on the interface in a microgravity environment. Under appropriate assumption on the initial data, of the time T, and the coefficients of such equation, we prove the well-posedness of the classical solutions for the Cauchy problem, associated with this equation.

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>The Cauchy problem of one dimensional generalized Boussinesq equation is treated by the approach of variational method in order to realize the control aim, which is the control problem reflecting the relationship between initial data and global dynamics of solution. For a class of more general nonlinearities we classify the initial data for the global solution and finite time blowup solution. The results generalize some existing conclusions related this problem.</p>

Abstract This paper is concerned with the positivity of solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear parabolic equations with the biharmonic operator as fourth order elliptic principal part. Generally, Cauchy problems for parabolic equations of fourth order have no positivity preserving property due to the change of sign of the fundamental solution. One has eventual local positivity for positive initial data, but on short time scales, one will in general have also regions of negativity. The first goal of this paper is to find sufficient conditions on initial data which ensure the existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the linear biharmonic heat equation which are positive for all times and in the whole space. The second goal is to apply these results to show existence of globally positive solutions to the Cauchy problem for a semilinear biharmonic parabolic equation.
